One record fell Thursday. And one loss was avenged.
Elaine Hemmelgarn, Eme Miller, Mary Hudson and Cori Vormohr snapped a nearly decade-old record at Portland Pool, leading the Jay County Summer Swim team to a 655-520 victory over Wells Community.
Hudson (backstroke), Hemmelgarn (breaststroke), Vormohr (butterfly) and Miller (freestyle) combined to lead the team with their record-breaking swim in the medley relay. They posted a time of 2-minutes, 18.11 seconds to break the old mark by nearly three tenths of a section.
Janelle Johnson, Libby Weaver, Taylor Fullenkamp and Abby Arnold set the previous mark of 2:18.39 in 2000.
The record-breaking was one of 16 relay wins for Jay County, which lost by 31 points to Wells Community earlier this year. The team also had eight swimmers earn three individual victories apiece.
Jay County's Alex Bader, Sydney Mathias, Sophie Bader and Anne Vormohr combined to dominate the girls 9-10- and 11-12-year-old divisions.
Mathias picked up her three wins in the 9-10-year-old backstroke, breaststroke and short freestyle while Alex Bader finished first in the division in the long freestyle, butterfly and individual medley. Sophie Bader's victories came in the 11-12 long freestyle, individual medley and breaststroke while Anne Vormohr completed the sweep by taking the butterfly, backstroke and short freestyle.
Noah Hummel's three victories came in the 9-10-year-old boys butterfly, backstroke and individual medley, giving Jay County nine wins in the age group as they took two-thirds of the individual events overall.
Eliza Bader took the top spot in the 8-and-younger girls butterfly, individual medley and breaststroke, Caitlin Mark won the 13-14-year-old girls long freestyle, breaststroke and short freestyle and Cori Vormohr earned victories in the 15-and-older girls butterfly, breaststroke and short freestyle.
Elizabeth McDowell, Daniel Ostrowski, Quin Blakely, Sok Vormohr, Neal Fennig and Sam Miller each turned in a pair of victories for Jay County. Christopher McDowell, Hayley Confer, Zane Shreve and Aaron Hudson added one win apiece.[[In-content Ad]]
