Happy birthday coach.

The Jay County Summer Swim Team avenged two earlier losses to South Adams with a victory on coach Bev Arnold’s birthday Thursday. The team put together its second four-meet winning streak of the season with the 658-520 victory.

South Adams halted Jay County’s first four-meet win streak by a 682-511 score in the first head-to-head meeting between the squads on June 17. South Adams also topped Jay County (8-2) by 110 points in the Wabash Valley Conference Relays.

But, thanks in part to another record-breaking effort by Cori Vormohr, Arnold’s team turned the tables Thursday to give her a happy birthday.

Vormohr added another team and pool record to her resume as she won the 13-14-year-old girls short freestyle in 28.66 seconds. The previous record was held by Abby Arnold.

She also improved on the butterfly record of 32.11 she set Tuesday night, this time winning the event in 31.43. She also picked up the backstroke victory.

Four other Jay County swimmers also won three events apiece, with Rachel Vogler and Lucas Holcomb topping the charts in the 8-and-younger division.

Vogler captured victories in the girls long freestyle, butterfly and individual medley. Holcomb took care of the boys long freestyle, backstroke and short freestyle.

Aaron Hudson and Derrick Lee matched each other in the 11-12-year-old and 15-and-older divisions. They each won the long freestyle, butterfly and individual medley.

Mary Hudson, Emilee Miller and Wiley Young each added a pair of victories in the 9-10-year-old division. Ashley Imel and Joseph Vormohr posted two wins apiece in the 15-and-older division.

Also winning two events apiece were Shelby Rines in the 13-14-year-old division and Alysha Miller in the 11-12-year-old division.

Softball awards

The Jay County High School softball team held its season-ending banquet recently.

Earning three-year letters were seniors Stephanie Imel, Jenni Chittum, Katie Alberson and Ashleigh Myers. Imel was also an All-Olympic Athletic Conference selection, and Alberson, Chittum and Myers each received honorable mention.

The team has also had several summer league games, opening with victories over Muncie Southside and Wapahani before falling to Cowan this week.

Cheer clinic

The Jay County High School Cheer Clinic for kindergarten through eighth graders will be Monday, July 19 through Thursday, July 22 at JCHS.
