Jay wins conference relays
Local roundup
BERNE — It didn’t take long to avenge a season-opening defeat.
The Jay County Summer Swim Team lost in its first meet of the season Thursday, but bounced back to win its third straight championship Saturday at the Wabash Valley Conference Relays.
Jay County won 24 out of 50 events, swept three divisions and scored 2,136 points to finish ahead of host and runner-up South Adams (1,850), which it had lost to in Thursday’s season opener.
Sophie Bader, Anne Vormohr, Ashley Mark and Sydney Mathias dominated the 13-14-year-old girls division, winning all five relays.
In the 9-10-year-old girls division, Erica Hathaway, Lilly Clemmons, Ashlyn Dow and Eliza Bader took the medley, backstroke and freestyle. Dow, Bader and Clemmons teamed with Natalie Blakely to win the butterfly and joined Kearsten Myers for first in the breaststroke.
The group of Eme Miller, Mary Hudson, Caitlin Mark, Katy Smeltzer, Carli Ostrowski, Rylee Clemmons and Taylor Campbell teamed to sweep the 15-and-older girls division.
Rockets split
CINCINNATI — The Portland Rockets went 2-2 on the weekend with wins of 4-1 over the Cincinnati Chiefs on Saturday and 3-0 over the Cincinnati Cobalts on Sunday.
They also lost to the Chiefs 11-10 and to the Cincinnati Champions 8-3.
Pitching was key in both Portland victories with South Adams High School graduate Dan Bollenbacher tossing a one-hitter in the victory over the Cobalts. Michael Caley allowed just four hits in the game-two win over the Chiefs.
The Rockets (6-4) were also in position to force extra innings in their opening game against the Chiefs, but back-to-back strikeouts ended the game and left the tying run on third base.
Jay County graduate Mitch Waters led Portland with eight hits on the weekend. Justin Marrero added six, including a home run, and Logan Hug had five.
Huffman scores 8
DUNKIRK — Maddox Huffman turned in a mammoth effort Saturday on the opening day of play in the West Jay Community Center Summer Soccer League.
Huffman scored all but one of the Sting Rays’ goals as they defeated the Sharks 9-5. Ben Crouch had six goals in the Squidz 11-5 in over the Whales, and James Rogers cored five times as the Thunder topped the Lightning 9-3.
Also leading their teams to victories were Daniel Fugiett (three goals), Zarron Lee (two) and Pacie Denney (one).[[In-content Ad]]
