The Jay County Summer Swim Team faced a stiff challenge from South Adams Saturday, but came out victorious in the Wabash Valley Conference Relays at the Portland Pool.
Jay County won with 2,432 points. South Adams was second with 2,340, and Union City had 730.
South Adams earned the most relay wins on the day, taking first in 30 races. Jay County won 18 times, but pushed into first place with plenty of second- and third-place points.
The team of Cori Vormohr, Maddie Fennig, Michelle Landfair and Ivy Simmons led the way for Jay County. They won all five of the relays in the 11-12-year-old girls age group.
The 15-and-older boys team of Derrick Lee, Scott Walker, Nick Ehrhart and Matt Eldridge won four of its five events. It took the butterfly, backstroke, breaststroke and freestyle relays, but was disqualified in the medley relay to prevent a second Jay County sweep.
The 9-10-year-old boys contributed three wins to the team effort.
Wiley Young, Lucas Holcomb, A.J. Pettyjohn and Neal Fennig teamed to win the backstroke and butterfly relays. Richard Osterholt joined Holcomb, Fennig and Pettyjohn in the medley relay victory.
Jay County will swim again today against Muncie’s Catalina Swim Club at home at 6 p.m.
Big win for Byrge
Dunkirk’s Kenny Byrge picked up his first career United Midget Racing Association victory at the Rush County Fairgrounds in Rushville Saturday.
Byrge found himself in third place midway through the race, but moved in front after a crash among the leaders. He held off Mark Frazier and Matt Arrington for the final 15 laps to win by a car length.
He also won the trophy dash, was the fourth fastest in qualifying and placed third in his heat. He is likely to see a jump in the points standings, where he sat fifth before the victory.
He finished 14th in the points standings in his rookie year last season, and had one top-five finish.
Baseball camp
The Jay County High School baseball camps, run by the JCHS baseball coaching staff and players, will be held beginning June 23. The date on some of the flyers distributed was incorrect.
