MUNCIE — The Jay County girls basketball team cruised to the championship of the Muncie Burris Tournament Saturday. It hopes to take another tournament title in two weeks.
The Patriots easily won the Burris title, smacking the winless Union (Modoc) Rockets 57-11 in their first round game and defeated the host Owls 53-27 for the championship.
They also got a first-round bye as the sectional draw was held Sunday and will play the Blackford Bruins (6-11) in the semifinal round of the Elwood sectional Friday, Feb. 11. They are trying for their third straight sectional title.
Jay County went unchallenged in either game Saturday, opening up big leads in both.

Runyon was the high scorer in the opener against Union with seven points. Bruggeman had 10 points, Theresa Reinhart added eight and Chelsea DeBoy scored seven.
While Jay County and Blackford wait until Friday to play, the other four teams in the Elwood sectional will get started with first-round action Tuesday, Feb. 8. In those games Elwood (16-2) will play Tipton (7-10) at 6 p.m. and Mississinewa (0-18) will take on Delta (7-13) at 7:30 p.m.
The winners of the two first-round games will play each other Friday, Feb. 11 prior to the Jay County/Blackford contest. The championship game will be Saturday, Feb. 12 at 7:30 p.m. with the winner advancing to the Peru regional.
The Patriots are 2-1 against sectional opponents thus far this year. They defeated Mississinewa 65-32 and Blackford 57-35, but took a 52-31 loss against Elwood.
They will meet Delta in the regular-season finale at home Wednesday at 8 p.m.[[In-content Ad]]
