Jay wrestlers defeat Delta (01/13/06)

MUNCIE — Pins and forfeits pushed the Jay County wrestling team to victory over the Delta Eagles Thursday.
The Patriot grapplers got three pins and picked up 24 points on forfeits as they defeated Delta 46-33.
Nathan Conatser (215), Tony McCowan (130) and Casey Kenney (103) each scored first-period pins.
After missing Jay County’s win Wednesday with an injury, Conatser finished off Grady Ray in 59 seconds. McCowan defeated Jason Buel in 1-minute, 26 seconds, and Kenney topped Jeff Dobbs in 1:27.
The only other contested victory for the Patriots, who lost six of the 10 contested matches, came as Tom Smith (189) topped Evan Daly with a 15-4 major decision.
Delta forfeited matches in the 140, 145, 171 and heavyweight classes.
Also Thursday the East Jay Middle School wrestling team got its season underway with a 72-22 destruction of Muncie Northside.
Shreve leads freshmen
Dexter Shreve isn’t messing around.
After scoring 23 points in the Jay County freshman boys basketball team’s win over Anderson Highland Monday, Shreve posted 21 Thursday as the Patriots knocked off the Richmond Red Devils 38-29.
Jay County had a 10-9 lead after the opening period, and outscored the Red Devils 8-4 in the second quarter. The Patriots outdistanced Richmond by the same margin in the fourth quarter as they improved to 9-2.
Kyle Simmons followed Shreve with six points. Cole Ingram finished with five.
Eagles split with Eastbrook
DUNKIRK — West Jay’s eighth grade boys basketball team closed out its home season with a 32-22 victory over the Eastbrook Panthers Thursday. The seventh grade team fell 46-9.
Nate Brown scored eight points to pace the eighth grade squad, which scored eight points in each quarter. Taylor Farmer had seven points, and Chris Landers scored six.
The seventh grade team fell behind 13-2 after one quarter and never recovered. Zach Cash scored three points.
EJ, Driver trade wins
WINCHESTER — East Jay won Thursday night’s seventh grade game over Winchester Driver, 34-26. But Driver dropped the Chiefs in the eighth grade game, 34-29.
Drew Houck scored 15 points to pace the East Jay seventh graders, who improved to 3-6. Aaron Emerick added 10 points.
Eric Homan scored a team-high 12 points as the eighth grade Chiefs slipped to 6-3. Brad Horn and Austin Emerick each had six points.

GENEVA — West Jay defeated South Adams in eighth grade girls basketball Thursday night, 30-23.
Brittany Muhlenkamp led the Eagle victory with 11 points. Keri VanSkyock notched nine points, and Kristen Selvey finished with six.[[In-content Ad]]
