It was a pretty big game to say the least. But Pete Byrum was up to the task.
The Jay County graduate and current Indiana Tech junior pitched the Warriors to victory and an NAIA World Series berth against Olivet Nazarene 7-3.
Byrum started the third and deciding game of the three-game NAIA Heartland Super Regional between the two teams at Indiana Tech Friday, May 16.
The former Patriot started slowly, allowing a couple of first-inning hits. Still, he was able to pitch out of the jam without giving up a run.
He did let runs score in each of the next two frames before getting back on track. He tossed one-two-three innings in the fourth and fifth as Indiana Tech built a 5-2 lead.
Byrum left the contest with one out and two on in the sixth inning. Shawn Kable allowed just one run in the final 32/3 innings to preserve the win.
Byrum struck out one and did not give up a walk in his 51/3 innings. Only one of the two runs he allowed was earned.
The victory gave the Warriors (40-18) a 2-1 series win, and earned them a trip to the NAIA World Series at Lewis-Clark State in Lewiston Idaho. They won the opening game of the series 5-2, and lost the second 7-4.
Olivet Nazarene also made the tournament with an at-large berth.
Seeded ninth in the tournament, Indiana Tech lost to eighth-seeded LSU-Shreveport Friday 11-1 in seven innings. Byrum did not play in the game.
The Warriors will play No. 4 Biola today in their second game of the double-elimination tournament.
Indiana Tech has made several trips to the world series in recent years, including a 6-3 championship game loss to Albertson in 1998.
