Jay's Johnson runs to state berth in 800 (05/24/06)

JCHS girls track

INDIANAPOLIS — The odds were stacked against her.

Based on sectional results, Amanda Johnson was seeded sixth in the regional in the 800-meter run. Only the top three move on to state.

According to those numbers, she would need to cut at least six seconds from her time — a massive amount in the 800 — in order to even have a chance. She would have to not only break, but shatter the school record.

Apparently, those challenges weren’t quite large enough.

Johnson didn’t cut six seconds, she sliced almost 10. She didn’t just shatter the school record, she made it look ridiculously slow by comparison.

The Jay County sophomore turned in an amazing race at Tuesday’s Lawrence North girls track regional meet, finishing third in the 800 run to earn a trip to the state finals.

The Patriots scored seven points, to finish 18th in the regional as a team. Indianapolis Ben Davis ran away with the title with 103 points, and the host Wildcats were second with 77.

Johnson, seeded sixth in the 800 run after winning the Muncie Southside sectional title in what was then a personal-best time of 2-minutes, 26.60 seconds, not only earned a state berth, but wasn’t far off of a regional title. She finished in 2:17.89, just a half-second behind champions Lawrence Central’s Alyssa Webb and only one hundredth of a second back of runner-up Lauren Massey from Indianapolis North Central.

The time Johnson turned in destroyed the Jay County school record which had stood for nearly 25 years. The previous mark of 2:22.4 was set by Sharon Donnally in 1982.

Johnson will compete in the IHSAA Track State Finals Friday, June 2 at Indiana University.

The last Jay County athlete to compete in the state meet in track was Nick Hoffman. He finished sixth in the 300 hurdles in 11th in the 110 hurdles in 2002.

Johnson was also in on the Patriots’ other top-eight regional finish Tuesday night. She joined her senior sister Alyssa Johnson and juniors Allison Fullenkamp and Jessica Mosier for eighth in the 4x800 relay with a time of 10:30.

Alyssa Johnson placed 14th in the 3,200 run in 12:38.43. Her freshman teammate Kylie Wellman was 14th with a time of 12:48.13.

Jay County’s 4x400 relay team of Mosier, Amanda Johnson, Erika Hunt and Sarah Mescher finished in 4:28.85 for 14th place.

Freshman Lindsey Current was unable to clear the opening height of 4 feet, 101/2 inches in the high jump.[[In-content Ad]]
