Jay's Loucks awarded again (04/06/04)

The season is long gone, but Jay County running back Alex Loucks is still receiving awards for his excellent 2003 football campaign.

Loucks was honored this weekend as an outstanding scholar athlete by the Northeast Indiana chapter of the National Football Foundation and College Football Hall of Fame. He was one of 25 athletes recognized at a banquet at the Allen County War Memorial Colesium in Fort Wayne.

He was also a member of the Indiana Football Coaches Association Class 4A All-State team.

Jay County also had a pair of football players earn postseason academic award from the IFCA. Loucks and lineman Tyler Bash were Academic All-State selections in Region V.

Loucks finished the 2003 season with more than 1,000 yards rushing. He and Bash were both All-Conference selections in the Olympic Athletic Conference.

Junior League

Tryouts for Portland Junior League baseball and softball will be Saturday.

Baseball tryouts will be at 9 a.m. for the Willie Mays League, 10 a.m. for the Pee Wee Reese League and 11 a.m. for the Sandy Koufax League. Softball tryouts will be at 1 p.m. for the Minor League and 2 p.m. for the Major League.

Football combine

Hoosier Gridiron will conduct its spring high school football combine Sunday, May 16 at DePauw University in Greencastle.

The combine is designed to allow high school students to perform in front of college football recruiters. It is open to any player in grades 9 through 12.

Each participant will be evaluated in the 40-yard dash, bench press, vertical jump, standing long jump, pro-agility run and four-corner run. There will also be position drills.

There will be an informational session for parents and students about he NCAA Clearinghouse, financial aid, NCAA recruiting rules and college admissions.

Volleyball camp

Purdue University will host three volleyball camps this summer for players ages 11 through 18.

An elite hitter, setter and libero camp for 14- to 18-year-olds will be from July 9 through 11, and a general skills camp for 11- to 18-year-olds will be held from July 12 through 14.

A high school team camp and coaches clinic will be from July 16 through 19.
