Jay's McClung scores lone win for Falcons (04/16/05)

A graduate of Jay County earned the only win for the Bowling Green women’s track team as it finished fifth at the Miami Invitational at Miami University last weekend.
Kerri McClung, a fifth-year senior, battled Breann Smith of Kent and came away with the win in the shot put. The pair was more than three feet better than the competition, with McClung first at 50 feet, eight inches and Smith second at 50 feet, 23/4 inches. McClung added a ninth-place finish in the hammer throw with a toss of 153 feet, eight inches.
Mitch Waters
The Jay County graduate was one of two Manchester players to have a pair of hits in a 4-0 victory over Transylvania in the first game of a double-header April 9. The Spartans also won the second game, 5-2.
Waters went 2-for-3 with a double in the opening contest. He scored one run.
He also had one hit in Manchester’s 8-6, 11-inning loss to Indiana Wesleyan Tuesday.
Waters saw some action on the mound Sunday in an 11-1 loss to Goshen. He tossed two scoreless innings of relief, giving up just two hits while recording one strikeout.
Troy Baumer
The senior and South Adams graduate was part of a fourth-place relay team as the Bluffton men’s track team finished ninth at the 16-team Marv Frye Invitational at Ohio Wesleyan University last weekend.
Baumer teamed with Kevin Davis, Dan Rosebrock and Shandon North to place fourth in the 4x400-meter relay with a time of 3-minutes, 27.90 seconds. They were two seconds ahead of the team from Thiel College.
He was also 10th in the 400-meter hurdles with a time of 59.39 seconds.
Steph Welch
Another South Adams graduate, she competed in four events as the Bluffton women’s track team was 14th at the Marv Frye Invitational.
Welch’s best individual finish came in the high jump, where she was 14th with a leap of 4 feet, 93/4 inches. She was 18th in the 800-meter run in 2-minutes, 37.18 seconds and 22nd in the long jump at 14 feet, 103/4 inches.
She teamed with fellow South Adams graduate Amanda Habegger, Rita Muether and Jana Hammer to placed eighth in the 4x400 relay in 4:24.43.

She competed in another relay in addition to her effort in the 4x400-meter relay with Welch.
Habegger, Hammer, Muether and Cindy Allan placed seventh in the 4x100 relay. They finished in 51.89 seconds.
Nicole VanSkyock
A graduate of Jay County graduate, she aided the Anderson University women’s track team to a sixth-place finish at the 17-team Little State Championship at IUPUI last week.
VanSkyock, a freshman, placed 18th in the 1,500-meter run. She finished with a time of 5-minutes, 12.77 seconds.
Heath Williams
The 2004 Jay County graduate helped the Ancilla College baseball team to a split as it played Valparaiso in double-header action Sunday.
Williams had a couple of hits as the Chargers won the opener 6-3 and lost game two 6-5 in 11 innings. He also had three hits as Ancilla dropped both games of a double-header against Lake Michigan College April 9.
The team is now 10-12 on the season.

The South Adams graduate picked up a couple of wins during the past week as the Bluffton University men’s tennis team went 1-3.
Martin helped boost the Beavers to their lone win, a 5-4 victory over Manchester April 9. He won his match at No. 2 singles 6-3, 6-4.
He and freshman teammate Jordan Zickafoose teamed for the lone Bluffton win in an 8-1 loss to Findlay Tuesday. They won the No. 1 doubles match 9-8.[[In-content Ad]]
