Jay's Pfeifer knocked out in opening round (02/12/07)

Local roundup

FORT WAYNE - The season came to a close for all area wrestlers Saturday.

Jay County's Cameron Pfeifer dropped out in the opening round of the semi-state tournament hosted by Woodlan at Allen County Coliseum. Colt Gentis and Josh Kimberlin of South Adams each won their first-round matches, but suffered quarterfinal losses.

Pfeifer dropped a 12-3 decision to Justin Clark of Bishop Dwenger in the first round, eliminating him from the tournament. The sophomore won the 112-pound sectional title at Jay County this year, and was the regional runner-up.

Gentis (119) lost a heart-breaker in the match which could have guaranteed him a state berth, falling 2-1 to eventual runner-up Eli Michael of Columbia City. He made quick work of NorthWood's Trent Klotz in the first round, pinning him in 43 seconds.

Kimberlin (189) also fell to a runner-up in the quarterfinals as Joe Gibson of Northridge pinned him in the third period. He advanced to the finals by way of a 9-8 victory over Homestead's Will Bostain.

EJMS fourth as hosts

The East Jay Middle School wrestling team placed fourth as hosts of the 12-team East Jay Invitational Saturday, scoring 224 points.

South Adams won the event with 265 in front of Shenandoah (423) and Winchester Driver (225). West Jay was last in the field with 96 points.

East Jay had three champions, which was second only to South Adams' four.

Chandler Stout (105) and D.J. Teeple (125) kept their perfect seasons in tact as they each won championships. Stout is now 15-0, and Teeple has a 13-0 mark.

Dyllan Derrickson (115) also had a perfect day as he won a title and improved to 14-1.

Championships for South Adams came from Todd Batt (80), Gabe Sprunger (95), Josh Ehr (110) and Adam Hofstetter (135).

Drake Meska (100) and Nathan Drumm (120) shared the top efforts for West Jay, each finishing in second place.

Bowlers bow out

NEW CASTLE - It was a rough weekend for the Jay County High Rollers high school bowling team as the season came to an end.

The team competed in the regional tournament at New Castle, finishing in sixth place. Only the top four teams advanced to the semi-state tournament at Richmond.

John Moore was the only Jay County bowler in the regional singles competition, but also missed out on a semi-state berth.

He was the sectional runner-up a week earlier.[[In-content Ad]]
