Jay's Weaver, Wells aid Little Giants in split (11/06/04)

Collegiate check-up

The Wabash Little Giants, with Jay County graduates, Kyle Weaver and Andrew Wells, split their three-way swim meet this week. The men’s team defeated Transylvania 131-74, but lost to Carthage 110-93.

Weaver, a sophomore, had another outstanding meet, which included a pair of relay victories.

First, he teamed with Chad Damitz, Matt Perkins and Colin Fahey to win the 200-yard medley relay in 1-minute, 40.05 seconds. Then in the final event of the meet he, Fahey, Perkins and Michael Hewitt took first place against in the 200-yard freestyle relay in 1:30.41.

In between his two relay victories, Weaver added a second place finish in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 22.6. He was just 0.15 seconds behind Edgar Vargas of Carthage.

Wells posted his top finish of the young season by finishing seventh in the 500-yard freestyle. He reached the wall in 5:48.67.

Nicole VanSkyock

The 2004 Jay County graduate got back on the course with the Anderson University women’s cross country team in time to celebrate the big victory.

VanSkyock, who did not run the previous week, finished 23rd as the Ravens won their third straight Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference championship Oct. 30. She finished 23rd in the race with a time of 24-minutes, 30 seconds.

Joscie Kaup

Syracuse University has now put together its second nine-match winning streak of the year with the freshman libero from Fort Recovery leading the defense.

Kaup, a 2004 graduate, racked up a match-high 22 digs in the Orange’s 20th victory of the season, a 30-17, 30-20, 30-19 sweep of Rider. Syracuse went on to Big East wins over Villanova and Georgetown to match its nine-game, season-opening roll.

She added 16 digs in the victory over Villanova.

The Orange is currently third in the Big East at 5-1, just one game behind undefeated Notre Dame and Pittsburgh. Kaup ranks seventh in the conference in digs at 3.88 per game.

Abby Arnold

The 2003 Jay County graduate cracked the top 10 individually and joined in a second place relay as the Ball State University women’s swim team battled against the rest of the colleges in the state at the Indiana Intercollegiate Swim Meet last week.

Arnold had her top individual placing in the 50-yard freestyle, finishing with her best time of the season of 25.04 seconds. She was also 14th in the 100-yard freestyle in 55.15.

She also was on the second-place 200-yard freestyle relay team, posting the second-fastest relay split on the entire Ball State team in 24:16.

Scott Steiner

The South Adams graduate just missed double digit tackles as the Bluffton University football team dropped a 25-13 decision to undefeated Mount St. Joseph.

Steiner finished with nine tackles, and he also broke up two passes in the game. He has 96 tackles on the season, 27 more than the No. 2 player on the Beaver defense.

Jay County’s pair of former players each played well as the Anderson University volleyball team closed its regular season with a 30-19, 30-21, 30-29 sweep of Transylvania.

Michael, a 2001 graduate of JCHS, racked up 13 digs in the quick victory. She also had a pair of aces.

She ranks third in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference in digs with 6.03 per game.

Jenni Little, who spent three season at JCHS before transferring to Kokomo, notched six kills and two blocks. She is among the top hitters in the HCAC as she currently boasts the No. 7 hitting percentage at .266.

Sara Hough

The 2004 Jay County graduate and her Ancilla College volleyball team closed the regular season with a tough 30-26, 30-21, 23-30, 30-28 loss to No. 15 Vincennes.

Hough led the team in digs with 22. She was also second on the squad with 10 kills.[[In-content Ad]]
