Local Roundup

Jay County’s freshman football team completed a perfect season Thursday. The East Jay eighth graders are one win away from following in those footsteps.

The Patriot freshmen topped the visiting Muncie Southside Rebels 22-6 Thursday, finishing with a 6-0 record. The Chiefs improved to 8-0 with one game to play with a 28-6 victory over visiting Hartford City.

Aaron Daniels led Jay County as it rolled out to a 22-0 lead, throwing a pair of first-half touchdown passes. He ended the opening drive with a 15-yard scoring strike to Clint Muhlenkamp, and hit Michael Jobe for a 20-yard touchdown later in the first half.

In between, Justin Mann notched a kick-return touchdown for the second straight game. He ran back a Southside punt 72 yards for a score.

Daniels also hit Jobe with a two-point conversion pass, and Austin May was good on both of his extra-point kicks.

The Rebels scored their touchdown before halftime to put the score at 22-6, and both teams went scoreless after the intermission.

Jobe had seven tackles to lead the Patriots. Kyle Cook, Mann and Muhlenkamp each had six, and Josh Myers had two sacks.

Billy Wellman tossed four touchdown passes for the eighth grade team, two of which went to Dexter Shreve.

Shreve caught the opening scoring pass, a 20-yarder from Wellman. He also got the second for 15 yards.

Wellman then found Lance Franklin for a 10-yard score and Cole Ingram for a 20-yard touchdown. He also hit Adam Garringer and Dalton McGill with two-point conversion passes.

Wellman had a fumble recovery, as did Trey Dunn.

East Jay’s seventh grade team was also in action against Hartford City Thursday, taking a 14-0 defeat. Trevor Walker had a fumble recovery as the Chiefs dropped to 3-4 on the season.

Tribe gridders drop two

FORT RECOVERY — Twos were rough on the Fort Recovery junior high football teams Thursday.

A 14-point second quarter by the New Bremen Cardinals did in the eighth grade team in a 20-6 defeat, and a failed two-point conversion resulted in an 8-6 loss for the seventh graders.

The Indian eighth graders trailed 6-0 after the first quarter. They scored a touchdown on a 5-yard run by Toby Metzger in the second, but New Bremen added a pair of second-quarter touchdowns to take the 14-point win.

The Cardinals grabbed an 8-0 lead in the first quarter of the seventh grade game, but Fort Recovery had a chance to tie the contest. Shane Stein scored on a 3-yard run in the second quarter, but the two-point conversion attempt was no good and neither team scored after the intermission.[[In-content Ad]]
