JC girls capture 1st title (09/19/05)

UNION CITY — Twice the Patriots had finished second this year. Now they have a championship to their name.

Jay County’s girls cross country team came up with its first invitational win of the season Saturday, stacking the top 10 for a victory at Union City. It scored 30 points, finishing ahead of Muncie Central (54) and Tri (95).

The boys team was sixth at the nine-team meet with 162 points. Muncie Southside won with 25 points, and New Castle was second with 42.

Alyssa Johnson led the way as four Patriots finished in a row. The senior placed third overall with a time of 16-minutes, 16 seconds, and her sophomore sister Amanda Johnson was fourth in 16:49.

Jessica Mosier followed in fifth at 16:56, and Kylie Wellman placed sixth in 17:06.

Tabitha Bogue of Winchester (15:37) and Muncie Central’s Stephanie Cole (16:11) went one-two.

Kelly Weaver rounded out the team score for Jay County, which got its first win after placing second at Bellmont and Oak Hill and third at Celina.

Freshman Brady Mills took the top spot for the Patriot boys, finishing 27th in 18:45. Josh Hawn and Josh Atkinson went back-to-back in 29th and 30th respectively with times of 18:52 and 18:54.

Josh Selvey crossed the finish line in 19:17 for 37th place, and Cory Mock was 39th in 19:25.

Also running for Jay County were Cassie Laux (26th - 19:06) for the girls team and Travis Towell (40th - 19:25) and Doug Murray (55th - 20:44) for the boys.[[In-content Ad]]
