JC girls take second, boys third at invite (08/25/04)

JCHS cross country

DECATUR — Now they know what it’s going to take.

The Jay County cross country teams got a look at the sectional course as they ran in the Bellmont Invitational Tuesday. The girls team also saw one of its top sectional opponents — the Fort Wayne North Side Redskins — as it finished second in the seven-team event with 67 points.

North Side, which finished one spot behind fourth-place Jay County in the 2003 regional, dominated with 23 points. South Adams was third with 86 points.

North Side also won the boys competition with 19 points. Jay County was third with 86 points.

Alyssa Johnson posted the top finish for the Jay County girls team, taking fourth in 16-minutes, 47 seconds. She was behind a pair of Redskin runners and Wendy Mahlan of Bellmont, who will try to deny her a third straight sectional title at October’s sectional meet.

Patriot sophomore Allison Fullenkamp, who placed fifth at the 2003 sectional meet, ran a solid race for nearly 1.5 miles before she had to pull out. She is still recovering from a knee injury, and coach Trent Paxson said he will probably rest her for a few weeks in an effort to have her ready for the tournament season.

Amanda Johnson, Alyssa’s freshman sister, was next for the Patriots in 18:08. Senior Jill Roughia placed 12th in 18:33, freshman Amber Detro was 19th in 19:09 and sophomore Jessica Mosier was 24th in 19:26.

Also running for Jay County were: Rose Weaver, 37th in 20:11; Lindsey Vesperry, 36th in 20:45; Kelly Whitenack, 44th in 21:38; and Andrea Collins, 45th in 21:45.

Haleigh Lehman, another top sectional rival for Alyssa Johnson, was sixth in 17:31 for South Adams.

Lehman was followed by Whitney Sprunger in 14th with a time of 18:45, and Katie Welch in 18th in 19:02.

The Thomas twins led the Patriot boys, but they didn’t cross the finish line until the top five runners from North Side and Bellmont had already completed the day.

Ian Thomas was 19th overall in 20:54, with Mitchel Thomas 21st in 21:09. They were followed by Cory Mock in 21:11, Josh Atkinson in 21:21 and Doug Murray in 21:40.

Also, Josh Selvey finished 27th in 22:04, and Edwin Clott was 37th in 22:27.

Although South Adams didn’t have a full team, Michael Lehman took the individual title for the Starfires in 17:47.

The next meet for Jay County will be Wednesday, Sept. 1 at home against Monroe Central and Union City at 4:30 p.m. South Adams will run in the Bi-County Invitational Saturday at 9 a.m.[[In-content Ad]]
