JC golfers finish 13th at Marion Invitational (08/10/04)

MARION — It was a day of improvement — and a 13th-place finish — for Jay County High School’s girls golf team here Monday in the Marion Invitational.
The Patriots, who are back on the links today in the Muncie Central Invitational at The Player’s Club near Muncie, got personal-best scores from freshman Trisha Champ and sophomore Katie Kohler on the way to a team score of 444 on Monday.
Huntington North shot a four-player total of 330 in the 18-hole event to edge Bishop Dwenger (333) for the team title. Host Marion and Yorktown tied for third at 347, while Anderson was fifth at 362.
Champ’s personal-best round of 92 featured nine-hole scores of 48 and 44. Kohler carded a 55 on the front nine and 57 on the back for her 112 total.
Also playing Monday for the Patriots were Brianne Morrical (113) and Shonda Sutton (127).
JCHS coach Tom Ferguson said that Champ played steady golf all day with the exception of one hole.
In a nine-hole meet on Thursday at Portland Country Club, the Patriots were edged 222-224 by Tri-High School.
Champ had the low score for Jay County with a 50, while Sutton had a 56 and Kohler and Miranda Denny each had 59s. Also playing for JCHS were Alissa McMillan (68) and Ashley Bunch (75).
Community center
Registration is currently open for the Jay Community Center’s fall youth soccer and flag football leagues.
Youth soccer is for those 4 years old through the eighth grade. Pre-school through second grades games will be played on Saturdays, and third through eighth grade games will be played on Sundays beginning Sept. 18.
The flag football program is for those in kindergarten through third grade. Games will be played on Saturdays beginning Sept. 18.
Both leagues are scheduled to finish on the weekend of Oct. 23-24.

Horse show
The Horsein’ Around Barn Buddies, a booster organization for Delaware County 4-H horse and pony clubs, is sponsoring a horse contesting show Sunday, Sept. 5 at the Delaware County Fairgrounds.
The event begins with warm-up poles at 9 a.m.
There is a total of $500 added to the payback amounts, which will be 80 percent of the entry fees paid. There is $300 added for the 3-Division open barrell class.
There will also be youth and open classes.
