JC golfers keep getting better (04/28/03)

Jay County Roundup

Improve. That’s what Jay County’s golf team just keeps doing.

The Patriots continued to watch their scores drop as they placed fourth at the nine-team South Adams Invitational Saturday with a 344. Norwell won the event with a 316, Fremont was second at 322, and South Adams took third at 333.

Two weeks ago Jay County opened the season with a 379, placing 12th out of 13 teams at Yorktown. A week ago the number dropped to 357 and fourth out of six at Bellmont before another big improvement this week.

Sophomores Tyler Johnston and Alex Hunt led the surge for Jay County, each finishing with scores of 84 to tie for 13th place overall. Jesse Shawver followed with an 86 in 19th, Adam Foster had a 90 and Josh Hall scored a 96.

The Patriots will play at Winchester today at 4:15 p.m.

No more no-hitters

At long last, the Jay County softball team decided it had seen enough. After being held hitless for the second straight game in an 8-0 defeat in the first game of a double-header at Marion (3-9), the Patriots fought back to win game two 10-7.

Jay County (4-8) broke out of its slump in the first inning of the second game and never trailed. It went up 3-0 after the first inning and added another run in the second for a 4-0 lead.

The Patriots scored five times in the seventh to extend a 10-2 advantage, and Marion’s rally in the bottom of the frame fell short.

Jenni Chittum was the offensive star of the second game, going 3-for-4 with five RBIs. She also tripled and scored a run.

Renae Laux finished with two hits, including a double, two RBIs and a run.

Katie Alberson and Chelsea DeBoy each had a pair of hits, and Saffron Redwine, Stephanie Imel and DeBoy each scored twice.

Ashley Cook suffered the loss in the game-one no-hitter, allowing eight runs — five earned — in six innings. She gave up 10 hits while striking out three and walking three.

The Patriots had suffered a 7-0 no-hit loss Thursday at Norwell.

Jay County visits Muncie Southside today at 4:30 p.m.
