JC grad Waters still leading D-III (05/13/06)

Collegiate Check-up

At the conclusion of the regular season, no relief pitcher in the country has been better than Mitch Waters.

Waters, a 2002 Jay County graduate, earned his 11th save of the season May 5. He led the nation in Division III as his Manchester Spartans (31-7) headed into the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball tournament this week as the No. 1 seed.

The senior is the best in the country at closing out games, with one more save than both Nate McCollough of La Roche and Mike Elsasser of Mount St. Joseph.

His 11th save came as he tossed a pair of hitless innings with two strikeouts in a 6-4 win over Anderson.

Waters is among the best in the country in earned run average as well, ranking 40th with a mark of 1.79. He also has six wins and has struck out 48 batters in 602/3 innings.
