JC grapplers first at Delta (12/13/04)

MUNCIE — Three undefeated wrestlers led Jay County Saturday as it won the Delta Duals with a 4-1 record.
Senior Josh Thornburg and juniors Kurt Hess and Bill Spahr each were a perfect 5-0 to lead the Patriots to wins over Beech Grove (40-39), runner-up Delta (46-26), Fort Wayne Northside (65-12) and Greensburg (54-21). Their only loss of the day came against fourth-place Greenwood by a 53-20 score.
It’s first ever win at the meet pushed Jay County’s record to 9-4.
Spahr (171) pinned everyone he wrestled on the day to improve his record to 13-1. Hess (145) also has just one loss on the year, and Thornburg (112) is 11-3.
Those three were followed by Nathan Daniels (135), Devon Huftel (152) and Jason Crouch (HVY), who all went 4-1. Also finishing with winning records on the day at 3-2 were Justin Mann (130) and Nathan Conatser (215).

OSSIAN — Derick Lee, Matt Kruse and Carson Sprunger were the lone Jay County and South Adams swimmers to finish in the top four at the 10-team Norwell Invitational Saturday.
South Adams, which finished fourth with 129 points, and Jay County, which placed ninth with 78 points, will compete against each other head-to-head tonight at 5:30 p.m. Oak Hill won with 290.5 points, Fort Wayne Carroll was second with 218 and the host Knights finished third with 170.5.
Kruse was the top swimmer from the two area teams, posting a pair of top-three finishes. He was second in the 500-yard freestyle with a time of 5-minutes, 22.60 seconds.
He also edged Lee in the 100-yard butterfly, placing third in 58.65. Lee was fourth in 1:00.19.
Sprunger posted the only other top-four finish as he was third in the 100-yard breaststroke in 1:10.59.
Lee also led Jay County to its pair of top-four relay efforts. He teamed with Matthew Peterson, Joseph Vormohr and Josh Hawn for third in the 200-yard medley relay in 1:54.72, and joined the same group to take fourth in the 400-yard freestyle relay in 3:51.01.[[In-content Ad]]
