MARION - Two teams with two losses are two victories from a sectional title. One of them goes home tonight.

The Jay County High School boys tennis team's 5-0 victory Thursday over the Madison-Grant Argylls in the opening round of the sectional tournament at Marion set up a semifinal showdown. The Patriots (14-2) will meet Mississinewa (11-2) today at 4:30 p.m.

Jay County, which is one victory away from tying the school record for wins in a single season, does not play Mississinewa during the regular season. The two teams met in the 2006 championship match with the Patriots taking their second straight title with a 3-2 victory.

The Patriots made fairly quick work of Madison-Grant (5-10), using dominating serves as they gave up just a total of four games in the three singles matches.

At No. 1 singles Josh Ludy steamrolled over Ian Barkdull, hitting the ball just four times in the final game. He opened the 12th game with an ace, Barkdull hit Ludy's next two offerings into the net and got only the tip of his racket on the fourth serve.

Ludy's 6-0, 6-0 victory pushed him to 16-3 on the season. That record shows the amazing improvement the senior has shown over the last three seasons after winning just a single match at No. 3 singles as a freshman.

Ludy needed just 33 minutes to finish off Barkdull, and four minutes later Phil Powell (13-5) was done as well. He gave up just a single game in the opening set at No. 2 singles as he blasted Isaac Gough 6-1, 6-0.

No. 3 singles player Kyle Simmons (8-6) cruised through his opening set before running into some difficulty in the second. Still, he had a 4-3 lead in the second and then took back-to-back games to complete the Patriot victory with a 6-0, 6-3 triumph over Tyler Gough.

The No. 1 doubles pair of Thomas McCowan and Heath Rigby was also tough when it was able to deliver a solid first serve.

After dropping the opening game of their match against Brock Sizelove and T.J. Herniak they bounced back to win four in a row on the way to winning the first set. They dropped game one again in the second set, but took five of the next six. Rigby ended the match with a winner up the right side followed by a winner down the left as the duo improved to 13-6 with a 6-3, 6-3 win.

Mark Alberson and Adam Horn, 17-2 on the season, had the most difficulty as they struggled to find their groove after playing just one match - a loss to Delta - since Sept. 13.

However, after dropping the opening set they blanked Marcus Ellingwood and Preston Poore in the second and rolled out to a 5-1 lead in the deciding third.

The Madison-Grant pair fought back to win a couple of games, only to have Horn and Alberson finish the 5-0 sweep 2-6, 6-0, 6-3.
