JC spikers get 1st victory

JCHS roundup

FORT WAYNE - The trip to the Summit City was well worth the drive.

Following a frustrating first two weeks of the season, the Jay County High School volleyball team broke through with its first victory Tuesday. They dropped a marathon first game, but bounced back to defeat the Fort Wayne South Side Archers 29-31, 25-20, 25-11, 27-25.

The Patriots had won just two games in opening the season with nine straight losses.

Sophomore Danielle Wellman made an impressive jump with extended varsity playing time as she finished with 12 points, 12 digs and six kills. She scored five of her points with aces.

Ashley Langenkamp, a senior, had 13 points, including four aces, and 12 assists, and Sierra Weatherhead finished with 12 points and 11 digs. Lacey Randolph had 16 digs, Maria Murphy recorded seven kills and Mariah Hornaday had six kills.

Boys soccer blanks rival

CONNERSVILLE - Impressive efforts from the Patriot defense and Brad Horn on the offensive end gave the boys soccer team a 3-0 victory Tuesday over the Connersville Spartans.

The JCHS defense limited the Spartans to just four shots on goal in the Olympic Athletic Conference battle. The Patriots and goalie Adam Daniels have allowed just three goals in their opening four games.

Horn took care of the scoring, tallying all three goals. He scored less than three minutes into the game on an assist from Ben Brandt and then added two goals in the second half.

The senior, who had 27 goals last season, has accounted for nine of the 12 Jay County goals so far this year.

Aldo Castro added an assist. He and Patrick Johnson each had one shot on goal.

The Patriots won the junior varsity game 2-0 thanks to goals from Adam Abbott and Austin Shiner.

Falcons top golfers

WINCHESTER - The Patriot girls golf team took its second loss of the season Tuesday by a 200-204 score to the Winchester Golden Falcons.

Cara Garringer came through to earn medalist honors for Jay County, which had lost just one dual match in both 2007 and '08, as she shot 44 at Winchester Golf Club. She was one stroke better than the Falcons' Mallory Chalfant.

Abby Denney posted the No. 2 score for the Patriots (6-2) with a 51. Whitney Gray shot 54, and Brittany Stevens completed the team score with a 55.

Alysia Fennig shot 60, Emily Morris finished at 73 and Cortney Myers had a 77.[[In-content Ad]]
