Legion Baseball
The Jay-Randolph American Legion Baseball team didn’t fare too well over the weekend. The team was winless in the weekend Anderson Holiday Tournament, dropping its season record to 1-9. Two tight one-run losses were sandwiched inbetween a shutout defeat — a 4-0 loss to Seymour on Thursday, where Jay-Randolph could only muster two hits.
In the first game against Anderson Thursday, the local legion squad rallied for four runs in the fifth inning to take a 6-5 advantage, but couldn’t hang on. Anderson scored a run in the bottom of the fifth to tie the game, and another in the sixth to take the lead. Jay-Randolph was held scoreless after the fifth, falling a run short in the 7-6 loss.
The game was even closer on Sunday, as the Jay-Randolph squad took a 4-3 advantage into the bottom of the seventh and final frame, but couldn’t seal the victory against Muncie. Starting pitcher James Brannan gave up a costly walk and a pair of singles in the final inning, allowing Muncie to leave the tournament with a 5-4 victory.
Baseball Tryouts
Baseball players from the area, ages 11-18, have the opportunity to tryout for the 2003-2004 Coast-to-Coast Baseball teams that are set to compete in Puerto Rico and Australia. The team will play against international all-star teams during the winter, spring and summer school breaks. There will be as many as 15 teams recruited from across the United States that will travel to compete in international tournaments in 2003 and 2004.
The tryout is scheduled on Friday, July 18, at 10 a.m. at the Fort Wayne Wizards’ Memorial Stadium. If selected by the Coast-to-Coast recruiting staff, the players will have the chance to choose which destination they would like to visit and compete against some of the world’s best teams. Each tour lasts roughly one to two weeks and will include baseball action, training and cultural excursions.
For more information about the tryout, or to register, call (740) 373-4455, or www.coasttocoastathletics.com. The cost of the tryout is $25, and includes two tickets to the Wizards’ game that evening.
