ANDERSON - The Jay County High School girls tennis team finished as the runner-up in Saturday's Olympic Athletic Conference Tournament.

The Patriots went 2-1, defeating Muncie Southside 5-0 and Connersville 3-2. They lost 4-1 to the host Anderson Highland Scots, who went 3-0 to win the title.

Jay County's doubles teams each narrowly missed turning in perfect days.

At the No. 1 spot, Becky Muhlenkamp and Emily Huntsman rolled to wins of 6-3, 6-1 over Southside and 6-2, 6-3 against Connersville. They dropped their match against Highland in a super tiebreaker, 7-5, 2-6 (10-8).

Ashley Caupp and Danielle Chenoweth went 2-1 on the day at No. 2 doubles, winning their matches against Southside and Highland 6-1, 6-0 and 6-2, 6-1 respectively. They narrowly missed a sweep, dropping their match against Connersville in a super tiebreaker 5-7, 6-4 (10-5).

Jay County (9-6) also got 2-1 efforts from Kayla Martin at No. 2 singles and Alyssa Rigby at No. 3 singles. Mariah Clark was 1-2 at No. 1 singles.

Baseball drops two

The Patriots managed just six hits in Saturday's double-header, losing 10-0 in five innings and 13-3 in six innings to the visiting Northrop Bruins.

Chance Fuller went 2-for-3 in the 13-3 loss, hitting a solo home run and scoring twice.

Alex Dunn added two hits off the bench, and Nathaniel Brown scored once.

Jordan McBride had the only hit for JCHS in the 10-0 loss.

Andy Haffner suffered a loss, giving up 10 runs - six earned - on five hits and seven walks in 2 2/3 innings. Landry Inman suffered the other as he allowed 10 runs - four earned - on nine hits and two walks in four innings.

JV golf 15th at invite

NEW HAVEN - Jay County scored a 399 to finish 15th out of 23 teams at the Bulldog JV Invitational hosted by New Haven.

Jacob Heitkamp and Ravi Patel each shot 96 for the Patriots at Whispering Creek Golf Club. Heitkamp had the team's only birdies of the day on the 480-yard, par-5 fifth hole and the 229-yard, par-4 11th, and Patel finished with three pars.

Ritchie Carducci had two pars on the way to a 103, and Nathan Drumm shot 104 to complete the team total. Justen Keller added a 106.

EJMS girls victorious

The East Jay Middle School girls track team won the East Jay Relays Saturday on the strength of its relays, and Zane Shreve turned in a pair of victories for the boys team.

In the girls competition, East Jay scored 116 to win the event with West Jay (63) third and South Adams (43) fourth in the six-team field.

East Jay was fourth among the boys with 57 points while R.J. Baskett (Gas City) won with 122. West Jay (38) finished fifth and South Adams (28) was sixth.

Shreve led the Chiefs with his victory in the high jump, clearing the bar at 5 feet even with teammate Zach Fullenkamp second. He also took the 110-meter hurdles in 16.14 seconds.

Abigail Johnson led a one-two finish for East Jay's girls, who won four relays, in the 1,600 run in 6 minutes, 5 seconds with Megan Wellman just three seconds back as the runner-up. Tasya Smith was first in the 100 dash in 13.1.

The West Jay girls team got a pair of victories, with Ciera Barcus winning the long jump a 13 feet, 10 ½ inches ahead of second-place finisher Malarie Houck of EJMS. Breea Holdcroft took the discus at 72 feet, 2 inches, less than three feet ahead of runner-up Rachel Vogler of East Jay.

Brody Shane picked up the only win for the South Adams boys, taking first in the 1,600 run in 5:14.[[In-content Ad]]
