PORTLAND — Chris Myers knew what he was talking about.

As the Jay County senior right fielder watched South Adams reliever Ken Walker warm up he said if he and his teammates got a good swing at the ball it would go out of the park. The first two batters Walker faced — Nick Timmerman and Myers — went deep, and the Patriots smashed five home runs against the Starfires in an 11-3 victory.

“He was just grooven’ ‘em in there,” said Myers. “That’s how we like ‘em. We were going to hit a few sooner or later anyway.”

The home runs helped cover up some ridiculous base running mistakes by Jay County. And, they were more than enough to help starter Josh Jellison run his record to 6-0, even though he wasn’t at his best early in the contest.

“It was a highlight film for dos and don’ts,” said Jay County coach Lea Selvey. “There were some times when we just lost mental focus. But, our defense made some great plays.”

South Adams (5-11) already trailed the Patriots 4-0 in the second inning when Dean Stahly called on Walker to relieve starter Justin Caffee. With Adam Homan already standing on first base, Timmerman promptly delivered on Myers’ prediction by smashing a home run over the left field wall.

Myers followed with one of his own for a 7-0 Jay County advantage. Adam Homan would score another run in the third inning on a Timmerman RBI triple before the home run frenzy began anew in the fifth.

Heath Williams got the second party started, ripping a line drive down the left field line with one out. Cameron Hummel came next, knocking a solo shot of his own to left-center field to chase Walker from the game.

Jeremiah Kaeser came on in relief, but didn’t have any better luck. Adam Homan fouled off a host of pitches before finishing his long at bat with another home run over the fence in left field.

Homan’s home run capped off a 3-for-3 day in which he scored four runs and had a pair of RBIs as the top five hitters in the Jay County order dominated South Adams.

Williams, the leadoff man, went 3-for-4 with three runs, one RBI and two stolen bases, and Hummel had two hits, two runs, two RBIs and one steal. Timmerman had a pair of hits, a run and four RBIs, and Myers was 2-for-3 with a run and two RBIs.

“We got some hitting to come around,” said Selvey. “What I liked about the home runs was most of them were line drives.”

Jellison stranded three South Adams runners in the first two innings, but difficulties caught up with him in the third. Justin Haines, Kyle Neuenschwander and Kaeser opened with consecutive singles, with Haines scoring on the base hit to left field by Kaeser.

Kyle White popped out to Homan at first base before Doug Roop launched a line drive over Chad Keen’s head in center field. Roop’s hit bounced over the wall in center for a ground rule double to score Neuenschwander.

Kaeser would scored on a wild pitch before Jellison escaped the inning with the Patriots leading 7-3. Jay County’s top hurler clamped down after that.

Jellison retired 12 of the final 13 batters he faced, including seven in a row to end the game. He also struck out the side in the sixth inning.

He allowed three runs — two earned — on seven hits in the contest. He also struck out seven, and did not allow a walk in seven innings.

Jellison has now tossed 36 innings this season and has 49 strikeouts against just three walks. He carries a 0.78 ERA and a 0.61 WHIP ratio.

He has helped lead the team to an 11-1 record and a top-10 state ranking. The Patriots will try to continue the success in an Olympic Athletic Conference double-header at Muncie Southside Saturday at 11 a.m.

“We’re just staying relaxed,” said Timmerman of the great start. “We’re trying to stay within ourselves. We know we have the talent to play.”

Caffee took the loss for South Adams, allowing five runs on four hits in 11/3 innings. Walker allowed five runs in three innings of relief, and Kaeser gave up one run as he closed out the game.

Kaeser went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI in the game, and Roop was 2-for-3 with an RBI.
