JC tops Delta, draws Vikings (02/18/08)
JCHS boys basketball
A good weekend got even better for the Patriots Sunday night.
Jay County High School's boys basketball team turned in its 10th and 11th straight victories - the 48-38 win over the Delta Eagles Saturday put the squad within one of a sixth straight 15-win season - and then got the most favorable draw it could have asked for when the sectional pairings were announced. The Patriots picked up the bye and will play Huntington North, the team with the worst record in Class 4A's Sectional 6, in the opening round of the tournament at Marion on Friday, Feb. 29, at 7:30 p.m.
The second quarter was once again the staple for JCHS defensively against the Eagles (15-4).
After allowing just five points on 2-of-12 shooting in the opening quarter, the Patriots (14-4) locked down even more in the second. They held Delta without a field goal, allowing just two points.
Over the course of the last three games Jay County has allowed just one second-period field goal. Opposing teams - Union City Friday and Eastbrook Tuesday along with the Eagles - have shot a combined 1-of-30 (3 percent) during the period while the Patriots outscored them 47-8.
Heath Rigby closed out the latest outstanding second quarter with a spirit-crushing shot. Dexter Shreve pulled down a defensive rebound with just seconds remaining before halftime and passed ahead to his senior teammate. Rigby nailed a half-court shot, which put the Patriots up 22-7 at the intermission.
Billy Wellman added a 3-pointer early in the second half to push the lead to 20. Delta pulled within nine points early in the fourth quarter, but never got closer.
After shooting below 50 percent Friday for the first time in a month, the Patriots found the touch again against Delta. They went 14-of-26 from the field (56 percent) with junior Kyle Simmons scoring a game-high 15 points.
Simmons also had six rebounds, two assists and two blocked shots.
Clint Muhlenkamp narrowly missed a second straight double-digit scoring effort, finishing with nine points and seven rebounds. Rigby has six rebounds and two assists to go along with his big 3-point just before halftime.
Skyler Case had 13 points for Delta, which shot just 24 percent for the game. Brady Young added 12 points.
Jay County, which has not had a sectional bye since 2001, will get to sit back this year and watch the Tuesday-night action.
The opening round on Feb. 26 will pit No. 10 Fort Wayne South Side (15-3) against Fort Wayne North Side (8-10) at 6 p.m. and the No. 7 host Giants (17-4) versus Homestead (10-9) at 7:30 p.m. The winners will meet in the first of the two sectional semifinal games Friday, Feb. 29, at 6 p.m.
The game between JCHS and Huntington North (4-14) will follow at 7:30 p.m. The championship game will be Saturday, March 1, at 7:30 p.m., with the winner advancing to the Marion regional.
The Patriots do not play any of their sectional foes during the regular season, but they hosted Huntington North for a scrimmage in November. The two squads have just one common opponent on the year with JCHS topping Muncie Central 51-46 while the Vikings lost 54-37 to the Bearcats.
Marion is perfect on the season against sectional opponents at 2-0. North Side and South Side are each 2-1, followed by Homestead at 1-2 and Huntington North at 0-3.
Junior varsity
Eric Homan led the Patriots to a 10-point advantage in the second quarter and they rolled to a 40-27 victory over Delta.
Jay County led by five after the first quarter, and Homan took over in the second. He scored nine of his 10 points in the period as JCHS outscored the Eagles 12-2 for a 22-7 lead at the half.
The Patriots sealed the game by scoring all of their fourth-quarter points at the foul line, including a 5-of-6 effort by Dexter Shreve.
Trey Dunn and Shreve each added nine points.
Jake Bryan led all scorers with 12 points for Delta. Tanner Wehlage added 10 points, but no other Eagle had more than four.
