HARTFORD CITY — The Patriots should go into their first sectional game with confidence. Now they know they can win it.

A day after the sectional draws were announced, Jay County rallied with a pair of second-half goals to score a 3-2 victory over the Blackford Bruins Tuesday.

The teams will meet again Oct. 11 in the opening game of the Marion sectional.

JCHS coach Sue Rager said the key to the comeback win — the Patriots trailed 2-0 with 13 minutes left in the first half — was determination after missing so many chances in the first half.

“I think tonight Dana (Horn) was just relentless,” said Rager, whose team was down 2-1 at the half despite taking four times as many shots on goal as the Bruins. “She was making things happen on the defense and making things happen on the offense. And Saffron (Redwine) was relentless up on that front line. The combination of that and the girls getting the ball down to them — with the defense playing tough they were able to play more offensively in that second half.”

A score by Sara Garringer with just five minutes left in the opening half got the Patriots (5-4-1) back in the game, and they were able to break through again eight minutes after the intermission.

Abby Schmiesing and Tequila Guntle worked the ball up the right side, with Guntle sending a pass across the front of the goal. Senior Amber Champ couldn’t quite get to the ball, but Redwine, another senior, tracked it down as she charged just inside the left post and sent a shot back to the right corner to tie the game.

Champ would not miss her opportunity 20 minutes later.

Just after a Garringer shot was saved, Redwine and Cassandra Huelskamp pushed the action right back up the left side of the field. Huelskamp passed to Champ near the middle, and her shot from just left of center deflected off of goalie Brittany Fancher’s hands and into the right corner for what would be the winning goal.

The Patriots have prospered since getting Garringer and Champ back on the field, winning back-to-back games for the first time this season to jump back above .500. Champ had two goals in last week’s 7-0 win over Muncie Southside, and Garringer had a goal and an assist.

“It’s important,” said Rager of the return of the couple of key players. “It seems like when they’re on the field things happen.”

Jay County got into its early deficit thanks mostly to Blackford’s Holly McIntosh and Erin Payne.

McIntosh, a sophomore, tallied the first goal of the game 15 minutes into the opening half after swiping the ball from Brianne Wellman about 30 yards from the goal. From there she had a breakaway and launched a shot over goalie Abby Loy and just under the crossbar for a 1-0 lead.

McIntosh started the second Bruin goal as well as she was pushed to the ground while breaking toward the goal.

Payne took the ensuing direct kick and lofted another beautiful arcing shot over Loy to put Blackford up 2-0 with 13:25 remaining in the first half.

Blackford (4-7-1) grabbed the advantage despite playing most of the first half on their own defensive end, but was not able to sustain that pattern after the break.

“We just miss-kicked the ball a few times,” said Bruin coach Kris Glancy. “That was what was our downfall really.”

Garringer pulled the Patriots to within one at the 5:10 mark, but scoring remained a struggle despite 16 shots on goal.

One of those shots was a penalty kick by Abby Schmiesing which was awarded after Dana Horn was tripped in the goal box. Schmiesing tried a grounder to the left side, but Fancher came up with the save.

Still, Jay County was able to rally as it came up with nine more shots on goal in the second half.

Schmiesing finished with seven of the Patriots’ 25 shots on goal, and Horn added six. Champ and Redwine each had four.

Glancy, who pulled McIntosh and Payne back to the defensive end to try to protect the lead in the second half, said his team will simply need to be more consistent to have a chance at Jay County in the sectional rematch.

“We need to control the ball better — just better passing,” he said. “(We need to) make sure we know where we’re going with the ball before we kick it. It’s just the things we’ve been practicing all year.”

Blackford finished with 10 shots on goal with Loy recording eight saves.[[In-content Ad]]
