They had a good start to the day, but the Patriots couldn't quite sustain it.

Jay County's volleyball team opened its invitational Saturday by evening its record at 1-1 on the year, but dropped its next two matches to finish third in the four-team field. The Patriots defeated Northeastern and lost to Marion and Norwell.

Varsity statistics were not available at press time.

Jay County went 0-3 in junior varsity action, dropping to 0-4 on the year. It fell 25-18, 25-22, 15-13 to Northeastern, 25-15, 25-14 to Marion and 25-17, 25-15, 15-6 against Norwell.

Liz Walker paced the Patriot JV team with 37 assists and 15 points for the tournament. Chelsea Grady had 22 digs, Julie Alig and Amy Alig each notched eight kills and Becky Muhlenkamp finished with four aces.

Ludy places third

DEKALB - The Jay County boys tennis team took on one of its biggest challenges of the season Saturday, competing at the eight-team DeKalb Invitational. Josh Ludy led the team with a third-place effort as the Patriots finished seventh overall.

Ludy had a good day at No. 1 singles with his lone defeat coming in the semifinal round by a 6-0, 6-0 score to eventual champion Tom Kurtz of NorthWood. The JCHS junior defeated Norwell's Brian Nahrwold for the second time in three days by a 6-1, 6-4 tally in the opening round, and took the third-place match 6-2, 6-1 over Chris Swank of Noblesville.

Phil Powell (No. 2 singles), Kyle Simmons (No. 3 singles) and the team of Thomas McCowan and Heath Rigby (No. 1 doubles) all finished 1-2. The Patriots rotated James Heare, Adam Horn and Mark Alberson into the No. 2 doubles spot, finishing 0-2.

Fort evens mark

NEW MADISON, Ohio - Fort Recovery's boys golf team evened its record at 2-2 Friday with a 166-194 victory over the Tri-Village Patriots.

The Indians posted a couple of rounds in the 30s, with Aaron Kahlig earning match-medalist honors with one birdie en route to a 2-over-par 38. Kevin Schoenherr shot a steady round with six pars and three bogeys for a 39.

Scott Hein added one birdie for a 42, and David Schmitt rounded out the team score with a 47. Other totals for the Indians were a 48 from Dustin Grieshop and a 53 by Brady Kahlig.

The top Tri-Village score was a 42 from Mark Wheeler.[[In-content Ad]]
