MUNCIE - Aly Miller and Leah Wellman led the Jay County High School girls cross country team to a fourth-place finish at Saturday's Delta Invitational.

The Patriots score 118 points at the Water Bowl, edging the fifth-place host Eagles by one point in the navy division. New Palestine won easily with 38 points, followed by Bellmont (82) and Pendleton Heights (97) in the 11-team field.

Jay County's boys finished with 280 points to finish last out of 10 teams. The Patriots were 46 behind ninth-place Decatur Central while Mount Vernon took 73-74 win over Bellmont.

Miller, a sophomore who was the runner-up in 2007, turned in the best finish with a time of 20-minutes, 46.6 seconds for sixth place. Wellman, also a sophomore, followed in 10th at 21:02.

The rest of the JCHS top five all finished in the 30s, with junior Kari Hemmelgarn 31st in 22:17. Cassie Laux, a senior, was 33rd at 22:19, and her sophomore sister Logan Laux finished 38th with a time of 22:55.

Tevan Nichols was the only member of the Patriot boys team to crack the top 50. He finished in 40th place in 18:25.

Austin Bentz finished 52 in 19:02, and Spencer Grady also broke the 20-minute mark in 59th with a time of 19:54. Branden Brinton was 62nd at 20:21, and Zach Johnson finished 67th at 23:02.

Middle school

East Jay finished as the runner-up out of 12 teams in the girls division and West Jay placed ninth. In the boys field, the Chiefs were sixth and the Eagles 13th out of 13 teams.

The best finish for the Jay County runners came from East Jay's Amber Huelskamp in fourth place with a time of 13:07. Behind her were Abigail Johnson (sixth - 13:17), Alex Loy (14th - 13:50), Julie Valentine (28th - 14:24) and Patricia Hein (31st - 14:27).

Miranda Gerber was 10th for West Jay in 13:34 ahead of Meagan Price (16th - 13:57), Jenna Star (60th - 15:52), Mykala Grayson (61st - 15:52) and Lynsay Buckland (65th - 16:20).

Dylan Cope was ninth for the East Jay boys in 11:37 followed by Kyle Scott (18th - 11:52), Zane Shreve (25th - 12:10), Jalen Ryder (46th - 12:57) and Austin Muhlenkamp (51st - 13:14).

In the boys race for West Jay were Keegan Gerber (56th - 13:28), Jordan Wood (75th - 14:40), Jesse Finnerty (76th - 14:42), Lee Mock (87th - 17:22) and Jon Lowe (88th - 18:12).[[In-content Ad]]
