So far, the home course has been good to the Patriots.
Jay County High School's girls golf team picked up its second home win in as many days Tuesday, knocking off the Union Rockets 219-228 at Portland Golf Club.
All of the Patriots four home matches this season come within a span of eight days.
"I think it is important," said JCHS coach Butch Gray of his team taking advantage of its brief run playing at PGC. "I think you get in an area where you're more comfortable. To go ahead and win those I think makes you feel better, to go ahead and prove you can do things.
Abby Denney improved by three strokes over Monday's match, a 205-222 victory over Anderson Highland, to earn medalist honors with a 47. Marie Lumpkin set the pace for Union with a 51.
Denny's opening shot was long, but well to the right as it rolled to a stop near the ninth fairway. However, she chipped back through the tree line to the fairway, chipped on to the green and two-putted for a bogey.
"If she makes a mistake she comes back. It doesn't affect her," Gray said. "She just plays. It's not something that lingers with her."
The junior bogeyed four of the first five holes and then came up with her first par of the day on the 401-yard, par-5 sixth hole. She also finished off her round with a par on the 348-yard, par-4 ninth.
"I think she's putting the ball pretty well," Gray added. "When you're putting the ball well you can save yourself a lot of strokes."
Cara Garringer played her best golf on the 284-yard, par-4 third hole, blasting her drive right down the middle of the fairway. She went on to record on a par, and also had three bogeys in her round of 51.
Brittany Stevens and Whitney Gray each had bogeys for the Patriots on the 113-yard, par-3 second hole at PGC. Stevens finished with a 56, and Gray rounded out the team score with a 65.
Jay County picked up the victory despite playing without No. 3 player Macey Gerber.
"They were able to find out how they react under pressure," said Butch Gray of Stevens and Whitney Gray, who stepped up to the No. 3 and 4 positions respectively. "Sometimes I'm not sure they realize how important their score was.
"And also we're starting to develop some competition for who is going to be in the top five."
Alysia Fennig had the only other par on the day for the Patriots, playing even on the 119-yard, par-3 eight hole as she shot 67.
Emily Morris finished at 66, and Cortney Myers shot 71.
"I was pleased," Gray said. "They're doing a lot of good things out there. I see improvement each and every day."[[In-content Ad]]
