JCHS blasts Tribe
JCHS girls basketball
GAS CITY - The Patriots didn't let their first regular-season loss in 22 months linger for very long.
After a bit of a sluggish start Tuesday, the Jay County High School girls basketball team found its stride in the second quarter and rolled to a 48-29 victory over the host Mississinewa Indians.
"I thought we got off to a slow start, but in the second quarter we finally got past it and picked up our defensive intensity," said JCHS coach Luke Cummings, whose team is now 4-1. "I think that was the key to the game."
The Patriots led by four after the opening quarter and then took control by outscoring Mississinewa 30-10 in the second and third. Pazia Speed led the squad with 15 points in just three quarters of action, with 13 of those coming in the first half.
Mariah Hornaday and Danielle Link played mammoth games as well, finishing with 10 points and 11 rebounds apiece. They led JCHS to a 34-18 rebounding advantage.
"A lot of them (10) were offensive rebounds," said Cummings. "That was big for us to get some second shots. When you play three games in five days, your legs are going to be shot a little bit and you're not going to hit all your outside shots. For them to finish inside was big.
"I thought Pazia was really good again. She's playing really unselfish. Her play is a big key for us."
Erin Hunt chipped in six points as Jay County shot 22-of-50 (44 percent) after hitting for just 28 percent in Saturday's loss at Winchester. Katie Butcher had four assists for the Patriots, who return home Friday after a four-game road stretch to take on Class 3A No. 3 Norwell.

Jay County pulled away in the third quarter and improved to 5-0 with a 35-28 victory over the Indians.
Hannah Ainsworth totaled 12 points for the Patriots, who led by just two at halftime but then outscored Mississinewa 12-5 in the third period. Mollie May joined her in double figures with 10 points, and Maria Murphy added six.
Maddie Edwards finished with seven points to lead the Indians.[[In-content Ad]]
