The two halves could not have been much more different.

In the first, the Patriots racked up 41 points, shooting better than 50 percent from the field. In the second, they made just two field goals as Blackford got back into the game after trailing by 23 at the break.

Luckily for the home team, the one constant was its free-throw shooting.

Jay County High School's boys basketball team hit 24-of-29 free-throw attempts Saturday night to earn coach Craig Teagle his 200th career win 57-44 over the Blackford Bruins.

It took the Patriots (1-1) just over six minutes to get into the bonus, and they were in the double bonus by the end of the first quarter. They scored 13 points on free throws in the opening half, then added another 11 in the second to help them overcome a horrible final 16 minutes from the field.

Kyle Simmons led the free-throw shooting effort, scoring all of his 10 points from the line. Billy Wellman went 4-for-5, and Luke Goetz was 6-of-8.

"We shot free throws really well," said Teagle, who has a 200-141 career record and is 124-88 at JCHS. "It always helps to have the right people at the free-throw line. Kyle Simmons is a good free-throw shooter ...

"When you have the right people up there then they're typically going to go in."

The Patriots shot 12-of-22 (55 percent) in the opening half, but couldn't get much of anything to slip through the rim in the second. A 3-pointer from Heath Rigby and a lay-in by Dexter Shreve represented the team's lone field goals of the second half. They shot just 2-of-16 (13 percent) from the field after the break, and went the final 10 minutes without a basket.

"We gave up no field goals in the fourth quarter and two in the second (half)," said BHS coach John McGlothin. "If we can get that kind of defensive effort all year I think we'll be happy.

The Jay County drought and some hot shooting from Marcus Dalton allowed Blackford to get back into the game as it pulled within eight points twice in the final period.

However, Dalton fouled out with 2:11 to play, and the Bruins (0-3) managed just one point the rest of the way.

"I think we just came out to compete a little bit more," said McGlothin of the second half in which Dalton scored 13 of his game-high 17 points. "I really challenged them to just believe in our system and try to do the little things. We still have got a lot of things we have to get better at. I was proud of our effort. I was proud of how we fought back. ... We kept playing hard. I think that was a big step for us."

Blackford had little offense other than Dalton, as Matt Nuckols followed with seven points. Micah Seidner added six points and four rebounds.

Wellman, who scored 11 points, and Simmons were the only Patriots in double figures. Goetz, Adam Garringer and Clint Muhlenkamp added eight points apiece.

Wellman and Rigby each had three assists, and Muhlenkamp grabbed seven rebounds to lead Jay County to a 28-17 advantage on the glass. However, Teagle said his team is still lacking the chemistry it needs to chase a seventh consecutive winning season.

"We're dysfunctional right now as a team," he said. "We just don't have those complimentary roles filled. ... We're missing those little things - the good screener, the good rebounder. We have to find those people willing to ... accept some roles other than everyone being scorers."

Junior varsity

Jay County went without a point until midway through the second quarter, but still picked up a 37-31 victory over the Bruins.

After a scoreless opening period and just six first-half points, the Patriots came alive after the intermission. They scored 15 points in the third quarter, pulling even at the buzzer, then added 16 more in the fourth for the victory.

Taylor Farmer powered Jay County with 18 points, 10 of which came in the fourth quarter. Nathan Brown scored all of his seven points in the second half.

Gavin West had 11 points for Blackford. Dylan Dakin added nine points.

Freshman

The Patriots dominated the fourth quarter to come back and earn a 29-20 victory over Blackford.

Jay County seemed to take control with an 11-2 second quarter, but Blackford pulled back within a point as it outscored the home team by the same margin in the third. However, the Patriots outscored the Bruins 10-2 in the final period to earn the victory.

Garrett Krieg paced JCHS with 16 points. Zach Cash added nine points.

Jordan Daily led Blackford with six points, and Clint Blackburn followed with five.

Junior high

Jay County schools won three of the four junior high games to complete a 6-1 day against the Blackford County Schools.

East Jay picked up wins of 44-23 in the eighth grade game and 41-13 in the seventh grade game against Hartford City. West Jay split its games with Montpelier, but scores and stats from those games were not available.

Matt Landfair led the Chiefs to their victory in the eighth grade game with 11 points. Dillon Ainsworth followed with nine points, and Andy Haffner scored six.

Brock McFarland powered the East Jay seventh graders with 12 points.

Kegan Comer and Cade Price each added six.[[In-content Ad]]
