JCHS girls fall to 'Kats

KOKOMO — For the first time this season, the Patriots are on a losing streak.
Jay County High School’s girls basketball team struggled early Thursday and fell 52-37 to the Kokomo Wildkats. Combined with an overtime loss Dec. 17 to Fort Recovery, it marked the squad’s first back-to-back defeats of the year.
Kassi Hemmelgarn, Maria Murphy and Mariah Hornaday each scored seven points for the Patriots (8-4), who trailed 16-6 after the opening quarter and were down by 14 at halftime. Alex Loy added six points, and Catherine Dunn and Katie Aker scored four points apiece.
Anastacia Kirby racked up 20 points and 14 rebounds to pace Kokomo (6-5). Kendra Ryker added 13 points.
In the junior varsity game, JCHS rallied from a 10-point halftime deficit to top the Wildkats 23-17. Katlin Petro and Amber Huelskamp scored eight points apiece for the Patriots (12-0).

Three win titles
INDIANAPOLIS — Sawyer Miller, L.J. Moser and Todd Batt each won championships Thursday to lead the South Adams wrestling team to a fourth-place finish at the Ben Davis Super 16.
The Starfires scored 387.5 points to trail No. 10 Hamilton Southeastern (572.5), the host Giants (461) and Fountain Central (432.5).
Miller turned in a perfect day and knocked off fifth-ranked C.J. Whitten of Ben Davis in the 106-pound championship match. Moser (113) won his title match by a 2-0 decision, and Batt, who is ranked 10th in the state at 138 pounds, earned his championship with an 18-4 major decision.
Isaac Werst (182) finished in third place, and Eric Pimentel turned in a fourth-place effort. Boaz Marbach (120) and Charlie Hirschy (145) each placed fifth, and Shea Pyle (160) finished sixth.

FR swimmers 10th
LIMA, Ohio — Fort Recovery’s boys swim team finished 10th out of 19 teams with 80 points at Wednesday’s Holiday Invitational.
Lima Shawnee won the meet with 325 points, and Ottawa-Glandorf was second with 275. FRHS finished scoreless in the girls competition, which Lima Shawnee also won with 446 points.
Andy Gray had the top finish for the Indians, placing seventh in the 50-yard freestyle with a time of 24.03 seconds. Marshall Hull was eighth in the 200-yard individual medley in 2 minutes, 31.57 seconds and  ninth in the 100 butterfly in 1:04.82.

Star girls split
BERNE — The South Adams junior varsity girls basketball team split its games Wednesday as it hosted the Bi-County Tournament.
The Starfires dropped their opening-round game 39-8 to Southern Wells, but bounced back to win the consolation game 23-17 over Bluffton.
Sharon Balsiger led the victory for the Starfires with nine points. Marissa Bisel and Alli Amstutz added five points apiece.
Mackenzie Jennings, Reba Morehouse and Balsiger each finished with two points in the loss to Southern Wells.[[In-content Ad]]
