The Patriot girls cross country team has traditionally dominated its lone home meet prior to the Jay County Invitational. Thursday night was no exception.

Jay County took six of the top seven places to post a score of 19 points and far outdistance visiting Monroe Central (36) and Union City (89).

In the boys race, the Patriots posted a score of 33 to finish behind Monroe Central (22). Union City did not have enough runners for a team score.

Defending sectional champion Aly Miller led the JCHS girls, running out to an early lead and never looking back. She won the race by more than a minute-and-a-half in a time of 20-minutes, 58 seconds.

Monroe Central's Liz Curtis, the only opposing runner to break the Patriots stronghold for the second straight season, edge Jay County's Leah Wellman for the runner-up spot. Curtis crossed the finish line in 22:30, and Wellman was just one second behind her in third.

The rest of the race belonged to the Patriots, with Cassie Laux (22:55), Katie Simmons (23:18), Kari Hemmelgarn (23:49) and Logan Laux (23:49) finishing fourth through seventh respectively.

Union City's top runner placed 14th.

Tevan Nichols took the runner-up spot in the boys race for Jay County as he was hot on Trey Thomas' heels. Thomas won the race in 18:39, and Nichols was just four seconds behind in second place.

Branden Brinton took seven in 21:11, and Spencer Grady also made the top 10 in ninth at 21:25. Zach Johnson was 11th in 22:41, and Austin Bentz finished 12th at 23:21.

Also running for the JCHS girls team were Liz Lennartz (10th - 25:52) and Kristen Selvey (11th - 26:17).
