JCHS girls win Bellmont invite (08/23/06)
JCHS cross country
DECATUR - The girls established themselves as a team to beat.
The boys still have a long way to go to reach their goal.
Running on the same course it will return to for sectional action in October, the Jay County girls cross country team finished first among seven teams at the Bellmont Invitational Tuesday.
The Patriots scored 44 points, finishing just ahead of second-place Leo (47).
The Jay County boys have a goal of making it to the regional this year (top-five sectional finish), but have some work to do after finishing last at Bellmont. The Patriots scored 162 points while the host Braves won with 30 and Leo finished second with 72.
Junior Amanda Johnson and sophomore Kylie Wellman led a strong opening effort by the Patriot girls, trailing only Haleigh Lehman of South Adams. Lehman, a senior, won in 16-minutes, 44 seconds as her Starfires place third with 111 points.
Johnson followed Lehman in second place, 15 seconds off the pace in 16:49. Wellman was next, beating Jessica McNulty of Leo to the finish line for a third-place finish in 17:11.
Senior Jessica Mosier gave Jay County another runner in the top 10 as she took seventh in 17:37. Senior Allison Fullenkamp placed 14th with a time of 18:23, and freshman Kari Hemmelgarn opened her career with a time of 18:39 for 18th.
Sophomore Brady Mills and freshman Tevan Nichols finished back-to-back to lead the Patriot boys team, but each of the top five runners from Bellmont, Leo and South Adams finished ahead of them. Mills topped the JCHS effort in 30th with a time of 21:05, and Nichols finished 31st in 21:22.
