JCHS golfers defeat a pair

MUNCIE — After dropping its first dual match Monday, the Patriots have picked up a trio of victories.
Two of those came Thursday as the Jay County High School girls golf team won a three-way meet with a score of 200. The Southern Wells Raiders were second at Crestview Golf Course with a 212, and the host Muncie Southside Rebels (223) were third.
Abby Denney played the first three holes at even par, with a birdie on the par-5 second and a par on the par-3 third. She added two more pars on the sixth and eighth holes en route to earning medalist honors with a 42.
The top scores from the opposing teams were a 46 from Southside’s Taryn Beckman and 50s from Sadie Herr and Jayde Sills of Southern Wells.
Macey Gerber picked up pars on back-to-back holes, the par-4 sixth and seventh, and also had three bogeys as she followed Denney with a 48. Alysia Fennig had one par as she shot 52, and Brittany Stevens finished off the team score with a 58.
Whitney Gray shot 63.

Boys soccer 0-2
MONROEVILLE — Jay County fell behind early in the second half on the way to a 2-0 loss to the host Heritage Patriots.
After a scoreless first half, Jacob Johnson of Heritage put his team on top quickly in the second as he scored at the 38:20 mark. The teams remained separated by  just the single goal until Aaron Horn added a second goal with just 1:54 remaining.
Jay County lost despite racking up nine shots compared to just five for Heritage. Austin Cowan finished with three saves.
The loss drops JCHS to 0-2, marking the first time it has lost its first two games of the season since 2005.

Delta tops spikers
MUNCIE — Class 3A No. 7 Delta was a difficult opening opponent for the Patriot volleyball team, which suffered a 25-16, 25-19, 25-14 loss to the host Eagles Thursday.
Junior Alyssa Rigby paced Jay County with team highs of 14 digs and three blocks to go along with six service points. Tanner Martin scored 12 points, Mariah Hornaday had five kills and Hannah Ainsworth put up five assists.
Megan May followed Rigby with seven digs, and Maria Murphy added four kills.
JCHS also dropped the junior varsity match 25-15, 25-17 to Delta. Ashley Motter led the Patriots with six digs, four points and two aces.

Girls soccer falls
MONROEVILLE — After a halftime tie, Jay County gave up three goals in the second half in a 4-1 loss Thursday to the Heritage Patriots.
JCHS fell behind 1-0 early in the opening half, but Lindsay Moser scored at the 20-minute mark to pull her team even. However, Heritage tallied three goals in the final 40 minutes to earn the victory.
Moser finished with three shots on goal and Sammi Compton had two for Jay County, which was shut out in each of its first two games a year ago.
Mollie May finished with six saves.

Tennis blanked
OSSIAN — The scores were slightly better Thursday, but the Patriots still fell to a 5-0 defeat at the hands of the host Norwell Knights.
After winning just a single game in a season-opening loss to Marion Tuesday, the JCHS boys tennis team picked up four against Norwell. Derek Smith again turned in the top effort in his 6-0, 6-2 loss to Kyle Isch at No. 2 singles.
Brad Leuthold and Joe Imel lost by matching 6-1, 6-0 scores at No. 1 and No. 3 singles respectively. The Patriot doubles teams of Chance Fuller and Drew Wood at No. 1 and Matt Shrack and Tony Schwieterman at No. 2 each fell 6-0, 6-0.
Jay County also dropped the junior varsity match 7-0 to the Knights. Colby Cline won two games at No. 2 singles.[[In-content Ad]]
