DECATUR - Drew Houck led the Jay County High School boys golf team to a second-place finish in a three-team match Friday at Cross Creek Golf Course.
The Patriots posted a 189 to finish behind the undefeated host Bellmont Braves (150) and ahead of the Bluffton Tigers (193).
Houck parred three of the first four holes at CCGC on the way to shooting a 42. Jim Baker and Nathan Kortenber shared medalist honors for Bellmont, each shooting 36.
Evan Ryder turned in the only birdie of the day for Jay County on the 322-yard, par-4 fourth hole as he shot 48, and Austin Mann record a par on No. 4 en route to a 49.
Ritchie Carducci had a pair of pars as he shot 50. Mitchel Rigby added a 55, and Seth Ainsworth shot 57.
Baseball loses by one
MUNCIE - The Jay County baseball team slipped below .500 Thursday, giving up an eight-run lead in a 12-11 loss to the host Delta Eagles.
The Patriots (6-7) took control of the game in the top of the third inning, scoring 10 times for an 11-3 lead. But Delta rallied with three runs in the bottom of the third, two in the fourth, one in the sixth and three more in their final at bat for the victory.
Eric Homan finished with two hits, two RBIs and a run in the loss, and Nathaniel Brown added two hits and two runs. Jon Pettus scored three times, Willie Mayfield totaled two RBIs and Ben Vance notched two hits.
Andy Haffner took the loss in relief.
Tennis falls to AC
MONROE - Ashley Caupp and Danielle Chenoweth turned in the only win for the Jay County girls tennis team Thursday as it fell 4-1 to the host Adams Central Jets.
Caupp and Chenoweth trailed 3-0 in each of the first two sets, but rallied back to win the first before losing the second to Madison Johnson and Emily Parrish. They broke Adams Central's serve in the third set to take a 5-4 lead, and then Caupp served out the match for a 6-4, 4-6, 6-4 victory.
Alyssa Rigby eked out the first set at No. 3 singles and had a 4-3 lead in the second before dropping nine straight games for a 6-7, 6-4, 6-0 loss to Hali Wendel.
At No. 1 singles Mariah Clark fell 6-2, 6-1 to Chelsea Selking, and in the No. 2 singles match Kayla Martin lost 6-4, 6-1 against Lauren Harvey.
The JCHS No. 1 doubles pair of Becky Muhlenkamp and Emily Huntsman suffered a 6-2, 6-3 loss to Katie Johnson and Amy Goulet.
Jay County dropped the junior varsity match 9-2 with victories coming fro the doubles teams of Alicia Degler and Dezi Clay, and Lissa Sims and Melinda Penrod.[[In-content Ad]]
