JCHS gridders draw 'Cats (10/10/07)
JCHS/SAHS football
Indianapolis was kind to the Patriots.
Monday's football sectional draw could not have gone much better for Jay County High School, which will host the Muncie Central Bearcats in the first round of the tournament Friday, Oct. 19, at 7 p.m.
South Adams will open on the same day and time, hosting the Southern Wells Raiders.
A look at the lower half of the Class 4A Sectional 12 bracket shows the Patriots (5-3) in with three teams - Central, Pendleton Heights and New Castle - with a combined record of 5-19. JCHS would not have to meet a team with a record of .500 or better until the sectional championship.
Jay County will play Central (1-7) in one quarterfinal game Oct. 19, while Pendleton Heights (1-7) will host New Castle (3-5) in the other quarterfinal in that half of the bracket. The other side will have Marion (2-6) visiting sectional favorite No. 6 Delta (8-0) while Muncie Southside (4-4) travels to Mount Vernon (4-4).
If the Patriots win in the first round, they would visit either Pendleton Heights or New Castle Friday, Oct. 26, for semifinal action. If Delta and Jay County were both to reach the sectional championship game, to be played on Nov. 2, it would be at the Patriots' Harold E. Schutz Stadium.
Jay County and Central do not play during the regular season, and their lone common opponent is Southside. The Bearcats lost 60-36 to Southside Aug. 24, and the Patriots beat Southside 27-25 on a last-second touchdown pass Sept. 14 from Billy Wellman to Brandon Reynard.
JCHS is 1-1 against sectional opponents this year, with the win over Southside and a 28-18 loss in the season opener to Delta (4-0 against sectional opponents). New Castle, Mount Vernon and Marion are all 1-1 against sectional rivals, Southside and Central are each 1-2 and Pendleton Heights is 0-2.
The Patriots have never won a sectional title, and last played for the championship in 2000. They lost that game 42-6 to Delta.
Southern Wells (2-6) will spend plenty of time in Berne over the next two weeks as it visits South Adams (0-8) for the regular-season finale Friday before returning a week later for the opening round of sectional play. The other quarterfinal game in that half of the Class A Sectional 34 bracket will have Northfield (5-3) visiting Adams Central (6-2).
In the upper half of the bracket Southwood (1-7) will visit No. 8 Churubusco (7-1) and Eastside (2-6) will play at Fremont (0-8).
If South Adams wins in the opening round it would either visit Northfield or host Adams Central in the semifinal round. The Starfires, who lost a heart breaker 26-20 in the sectional championship last season to Madison-Grant, last won a title in 1996.[[In-content Ad]]
