A pair of comebacks lifted the Jay County High School boys tennis team to a 3-2 victory Thursday over the Bluffton Tigers.
Phil Powell and Kyle Simmons each lost 6-1 in their opening sets at No. 1 and 2 singles respectively. Both trailed 5-2 in the second set, with JCHS seemingly headed to a 4-1 defeat.
But the Patriot senior leaders would not go away.
Powell and Simmons both battledback to force second-set tiebreakers. Powell won his in shutout fashion and Simmons earned an 8-6 win.
They each fell behind again early in the third set, but Simmons pulled ahead 5-3 against Jon Dauterman and finished off his victory 1-6, 7-6 (8-6), 6-4 to improve to 7-3 on the year. Powell (4-5) didn't lead Cameron Gerber in the third set until pulling ahead 6-5 on the way to a 1-6, 7-6 (7-0), 7-5 victory.
Chase Wellman was off the court in a hurry at No. 3 singles, as he earned the first victory of the night for JCHS (4-3). He rolled for the second straight match, running his record to 6-4 with a 6-1, 6-2 victory over Jackson Bates.
Jared Valentine and Adam Horn lost 6-4, 6-2 to Matt Gerber and Cody Cochran at No. 1 doubles. In the No. 2 doubles match, Sam Miller and Tylor Smith fell 6-3, 6-1 to Gary Green and Drew Neuenschwander.
Jay County has won three straight matches and four of its last five.
The Patriots lost the junior varsity match 4-1 with Austin Cowan providing the lone win 8-4 over Matt Dann at No. 3 singles.
