JCHS spikers top Randolph Southern (10/05/07)

LYNN - The Patriots bounced back from a loss at home Tuesday with a victory on the road.

Jay County High School's volleyball team won the opening two games Thursday night and went on to top the host Randolph Southern Rebels 25-18, 25-18, 22-25, 25-16.

Several Patriot players turned in big nights, including senior Shelby Rines who had a team-best 11 kills to go along with 13 digs. Sophomore Kelsey Wood powered the defense for JCHS (13-15) with 22 digs, and was second on the squad with nine kills.

Sarah Mescher had 10 points and seven kills, and Sarah Westgerdes played huge defense at the net as she racked up nine blocks to go along with eight kills. Sharon Dirksen put up 26 assists, and Chelsea Grady had 14 digs.

Starfires sweep ACAC

WOODBURN - South Adams Middle School's cross country teams stole the show Thursday, winning both the boys and girls Allen County Athletic Conference titles at Woodlan.

The Starfire girls team rolled to victory with 34 points while Southern Wells and Adams Central each scored 76 for second and third respectively. The SAMS boys scored 46 points, also finishing ahead of Southern Wells (61) and Adams Central (77).

South Adams took the top spot in each race, with Hannah Moore and Evan Liechty leading the team victories. Moore was first for the girls in 11-minutes, 57 seconds, and Liechty won the boys race in 10:45.

Joining Moore were Lexy Sparks (fifth - 13:12), Adrianna Teeter (ninth - 13:22), Jenna Smith (10th - 13:25) and Kristen Muselman (13th - 13:37).

Following Liechty en route to the boys title were Brody Shane (fourth - 11:31), Joel Hawbaker (11th - 12:17), Mark Smith (12th - 12:17) and Brett Affolder (18th - 12:47).

Chief 7th still perfect

Cade Price and Brock McFarland paced the undefeated East Jay Middle School seventh grade football team in its 32-6 victory over the Winchester Golden Falcons. The eighth grade team lost 22-16 in overtime.

Price kicked off the scoring for the Chiefs (6-0) with a 1-yard run midway through the first quarter, and added a 38-yard TD run in the second. McFarland tossed a 52-yard TD pass to Daniel Walter, and scored on a 71-yard run late in the second quarter for a 26-0 halftime lead.

Gerardo Perez added a 3-yard TD run in the third quarter.

The East Jay eighth graders (3-4) fell behind 16-0 and then pulled even before falling in the extra session. Despite having only 13 players in uniform, the Chiefs fought back from their deficit as Andre Duke scored on a 9-yard run, then tossed a 44-yard TD pass to Kamron Bentz with 5:07 left in the fourth quarter. Duke ran in for both two-point conversions for the tie, but the team failed to score in overtime.

Gerber wins for Eagles

DUNKIRK - With one more runner, the Eagles would have had a victory.

Miranda Gerber of the West Jay Middle School girls cross country team led a one-two-three Eagle finish in Thursday's race against Union City Westside, but the team does not have enough runners for a team score. Westside topped West Jay in the boys competition, 17-43.

Gerber dominated the girls race, winning by more than a minute in 14-minutes, 29 seconds. Liz Lennartz was second in 15:41, and Meagan Price placed third with a time of 15:54. Cierra Nichols was seventh at 17:45.

Kyle Selvey turned in the top effort for the West Jay boys in fourth at 14:10. Dylan Friddle finished seventh in 15:08, and Zach Johnson placed ninth at 16:56. Rounding out the team score were Levi Pitser (11th - 17:53) and Kyle Murdock (12th - 18:19).

Flyers top Tribe pair

FORT RECOVERY - The Fort Recovery Middle School football teams managed just one touchdown in two games Thursday as the eighth graders lost 14-8 to the Marion Local Flyers and the seventh grade team fell 18-0.

Aaron Vagedes scored the lone touchdown of the day on a 60-yard pass from Kenny Wenning. Jake Whitacre ran in the two-point conversion.[[In-content Ad]]
