JCHS stays perfect (04/17/08)
JCHS baseball
FORT WAYNE - The Patriots trailed again Wednesday. But they took control a little earlier this time.
A night after scoring the game-winning run with two outs in the seventh inning, for the second time this year, the Jay County High School baseball team erased a 3-0 deficit with a six-run third inning. It tacked on two more runs in the fourth and sixth, handing the host Wayne Generals a 10-4 defeat.
Billy Wellman keyed the big third inning, hitting a three-run home run. The blast was the 13th of the year for the Patriots, who are now 6-0.
Jay County's potent No. 2, 3, 4 hitting senior group of Michael Jobe, Josh Ludy and Thomas McCowan did most of the other offensive work.
McCowan continued to be a doubles machine, smacking two of them as he finished 3-for-3. He drove in three runs, scored once and stole a base.
Jobe was 3-for-4 with a double, three runs and a stolen base, and Ludy went 2-for-3 with a double, three RBIs and two runs.
Trey Dunn, who hit his first career home run Tuesday, tossed a complete game for the victory. Only one of the four runs against him was earned as he gave up eight hits and a walk while striking out three.

An error-filled top of the seventh forged a tie, but Jay County regrouped in the bottom as a John Pettus double lifted the host Patriots to a 13-12 win over the Anderson Highland Scots.
JCHS (2-1) led 12-7 heading into the final frame, but allowed five unearned runs as the Scots rallied to tie. However, Tyler Freyburgher got on base by way of a Highland error in the bottom of the seventh and Pettus ripped a double off the fence to win the game.
Pettus finished 3-for-4 with two doubles and three runs in the win. Nathaniel Brown had two hits, three RBIs and two runs, Freyburgher went 3-for-3 with two runs, and Jared Conatser had two hits and two runs.
Brown, Mike Masters, Eric Homan and Skylar Petty each saw time on the mound in the victory.
