INDIANAPOLIS - Another week, another step up.

Jay County High School's girls basketball team climbed up another notch this week, taking the No. 8 position in this week's Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association Class 4A poll released Monday.

The Patriots (7-0) earned 36 poll points, just one behind seventh-ranked Carmel (6-2) and six ahead of No. 9 Penn (8-1). Ben Davis earned 14 out of 15 first-place votes and continues to top the Class 4A poll.

In it's only game last week, Jay County made quick work of the Bluffton Tigers for a 63-18 win. It plays at Muncie Central tonight, and at home Saturday against Anderson Highland.

At 33.7 points per game, the Patriots have the fourth-largest average margin of victory in the state. Their defensive average of 30.9 points allowed is seventh overall and second in Class 4A, and they have twice held opponents under 20.

JCHS is third in the Sagarin Ratings and is also ranked 14th in the Indiana Basketball Coaches Association poll, which encompasses all four classes.

Wellman earns honor

INDIANAPOLIS - Jay County High School senior Billy Wellman will be honored Sunday by the Indianapolis Colts.

The winners, who are all among the top five percent academically in their classes, will be honored Sunday morning at Lucas Oil Stadium. They will also be introduced during the Colts game against the Detroit Lions.

Wellman finished second in the state at 254.6 yards per game passing. He tossed 32 touchdown passes and also ran for 443 yards and five TDs.
