Jay County has had its tune-up. Next week, it will be tested.
The Patriot girls basketball team opened its season Friday night, scoring the game's first 15 points in a 73-18 destruction of the Muncie Southside Rebels.
Senior Whitney Homan kicked off her season with a flurry of 3-pointers while freshman Lindsay Wellman opened her career with a double-double.
"We got off to a slow start, which sometimes that happens in the first game," said JCHS coach Kirk Comer, whose team will host Bellmont and Winchester next week. "I was a little surprised by that with us being a veteran team, but we got it going. ... I thought once we got going we played pretty well, pretty consistent."
Jay County had just two points in the first four minutes, but added 13 more before the Rebels got their only score of the first quarter on a Ty Ronda Benning 3-pointer with just two seconds left. Then the home team blew the game wide open behind some sharp shooting from Homan.
The senior, who drained three free throws when she was fouled on a 3-point try in the first period, opened the second quarter with a triple on an assist from Nicole Pfeifer. She added a triple off an Abby Loy assist on the next Patriot possession and hit her third consecutive 3-point try to open the year on a Sara Garringer assist with 5:27 left in the opening half.
The trio of 3-pointers did the bulk of the damage in a 17-0 Patriot run, which pushed the lead to 32-4. They were up 42-10 at the half and 61-16 at the end of three quarters en route to the big win.
Homan, who was hobbled by injuries much of last season, finished with 12 points, three rebounds and one assist.
"I think Whitney Homan is more healthy (now) than she was at any time last year," said Comer. "She's a very good shooter and a very smart basketball player. We were very excited to see her come out and get off to a good start."
Wellman also turned in a big effort as she debuted in the starting lineup. She scored her first career points with 1:35 remaining in the opening period and never slowed down.
She finished 5-of-8 from the field and hit a pair of free throws for a game-high 12 points. She also was the best rebounder for the contest with 11 while added two assists and one block.
Fellow freshman Pazia Speed also got on the board in her first varsity game, hitting back-to-back buckets late in the third quarter for her four points.
"Lindsay Wellman does a great job for us inside," said Comer. "The girls have all the confidence in the world in her. She's a great team player. She knows where to get the ball. There are just a lot of things that come natural to her ... She's going to be a big asset for us."
Following Wellman for the Patriots was Pfeifer, who finished 4-of-5 from the field for nine points. Garringer added eight points and four assists, and Dana Horn had seven points and four assists.
Theresa Reinhart and Cassandra Huelskamp each grabbed four rebounds.
While the foul shooting tailed off after the intermission, Jay County was excellent from the line as it built the large first-half lead.
It made 12-of-15 free throws before the break, and Horn (4-of-4), Homan (3-of-3) and Loy (2-of-2) all finished the game perfect from the stripe.
The Patriots also forced 29 turnovers, while giving the ball away just 13 times.
"It's game one. I'm glad that we got the win," said Comer, "and I think that these girls are going to be pretty exciting to watch ... I think it's going to be fun."
Benning totaled 12 points and four rebounds for the Rebels. Margee Reeder finished with six boards.
The 55-point victory continued Jay County's dominance over Southside, whose closest recent game against the Patriots was a 22-point loss in 2003.
JCHS faces more of a challenge with the back-to-back games against Bellmont and Winchester, teams which had a combined 30-14 record last year. The Patriots lost to Bellmont 73-60 last season and defeated Winchester 65-58.

Jay County held the Rebels scoreless for the first three quarters in a 46-4 win.
Kaelee Keller scored for the Patriots just four seconds into the game, to start a 44-0 run. Southside's first hoop came from Lyndsay Bilbrey with just 2:04 left in the game.
Pazia Speed and Amber Edmundson each reached double figures with 11 and 10 points respectively. Keller had seven points, and Sharon Dirksen scored six.
