JC's Bye gets one-meter win (02/19/05)
Collegiate check-up
The Ball State men’s swim team lost to Eastern Michigan Feb. 11, but not without a big effort from a former Jay County athlete.
Caleb Bye, a 2003 JCHS graduate, won one diving competition and finished second in the other in the 138.5-104.5 defeat.
Bye led a one-two finish for Ball State in the one-meter event. He finished in front of teammate Zach Whitaker by three points with a score of 262.13.
He was the second-half of a one-two finish in the three-meter competition, finishing behind fellow Cardinal Ryan Plantz with 264.60 points.
Sara Heitkamp
The awards just keep coming for the 2002 graduate of Fort Recovery.
Heitkamp, who was named a preseason third-team All-American by D3hoops.com, picked up two more honors this week. The junior guard for the Capital University women’s basketball team was named to the ESPN The Magazine/CoSIDA Academic All-District IV first team. Because she was a first-team selection, she is now eligible for All-American status.
She was also named the Ohio Athletic Conference’s player of the week for the third time this season. She is second in the OAC in scoring (17.9 points per game) and steals (3.39), third in assists (4.26) and 10th in rebounding (5.8).
Heitkamp, who carries a 3.821 grade point average, had two more outstanding games this week as the Crusaders ran their win streak to five in a row and improved to 19-4 overall. She had a team-high 23 points in an 82-74 win over Marietta Wednesday, hitting 6-of-9 from the field. She also had four assists, three rebounds and two steals.
She also scored 23 points in a 96-59 thumping of Mount Union Feb. 12. She went 10-of-14 in that contest, including 3-of-4 from 3-point range. She added four rebounds, three assists and one steal.
Steph Welch
The former South Adams Starfire scored all of the points for the Bluffton College women’s track team as it finished last in a six-team meet at Ohio Northern Feb. 11.
Welch, a 2002 SAHS graduate, brought home the high jump title. She outdistanced the rest of the field by two inches with a height of 5 feet, 1.75 inches.
She was also fifth in the 1,000-meter run in 3-minutes, 29.21 seconds.
Kerri McClung
The Jay County graduate brought home a first-place finish for the Bowling Green women’s track team as it took fourth at the All-Ohio Championships at Ohio University in Athens, Ohio Feb. 12.
McClung eked out a win by 1.25 inches in the shot put. Her winning throw was 48 feet, 10.75 inches.
Kyle Weaver
The Jay County graduate added another top-three finish as he and the Wabash College men’s swim team placed third at the North Coast Athletic Conference championships last weekend.
Weaver, who was also on the third-place 200-yard freestyle relay team on the first day of competition Feb. 10, joined Colin Fahey, Michael Hewitt and Michael Belanger to take third in the 400 freestyle relay Feb. 12. The team finished in 3-minutes, 12.52 seconds.
He also competed in a pair of individual events for the Little Giants, which included an eighth-place effort in the 100 butterfly in 52.39 seconds. He was 14th in the 100 freestyle in 49.52.
Andrew Wells
A former teammate of Weaver’s at Jay County, he also swam for Wabash at the NCAC championships.
He was 14th in the 1,650-yard freestyle in 17-minutes, 40.48 seconds.
Joanie Muhlenkamp
The 2002 Jay County graduate played 29 minutes as the Taylor University Fort Wayne women’s basketball team hammered Ohio State Lima/Rhoades State College 82-48 Tuesday.
Muhlenkamp scored nine points in the victory. She also grabbed five rebounds and had one steal.
She finished with two points and six rebounds in a 79-73 loss to the Indiana Institute of Technology Thursday.
Nicole VanSkyock
An Anderson University freshman and 2004 graduate of Jay County, she finished sixth in her debut for the women’s track team.
VanSkyock, who also runs cross country for the Ravens, was sixth in the 1,500-meter run in 5-minutes, 27.64 seconds. Anderson won the nine-team meet.
Amy Meyer
The South Adams graduate started in each of the last two victories for the University of St. Francis women’s basketball team as it improved to 21-10 on the season.
Meyer scored five points and added one block and one assist in a 90-82 win over Bethel College Feb. 12. She also had one rebound and one assist Wednesday, in a 75-55 victory over Grace College.

The Jay County graduate got on the scoreboard as the Ancilla College men’s basketball team rolled to a 96-80 win over Kalamazoo Valley Community College Thursday.
