Jets push past Fort Recovery late (04/13/04)

Local Roundup

As the weather got chillier, the Jets were just heating up.

Franklin Monroe scored six times in the final two innings to stun the Fort Recovery Indians 10-9 in baseball action Monday night.

The Tribe (3-5) scored four times in the third inning and carried a 7-4 lead with two frames to play. Franklin Monroe tied the game with three runs in the top of the sixth, and pulled ahead with three more in the top of the seventh.

Fort Recovery nearly came back, but managed to score just two of the three runs it needed in the final at bat.

Dan Heitkamp suffered the loss as he and fellow pitcher Todd Post were forced to deal with eight unearned runs.

Heitkamp gave up three unearned runs on four hits in two innings. He walked two and struck out one.

Post allowed seven runs — two earned — on six hits in five innings. He recorded seven strikeouts and two walks.

Post was the top hitter for the Tribe, finishing a perfect 3-for-3 with a double. He scored three times, drove in a pair of runs and stole one base.

C.J. Tobe went 2-for-4 with a double and a pair of runs, and Nick Wehrkamp doubled and had two RBIs. Greg Faller scored twice and stole a base, and Dusty Guggenbiller stole two bases and scored once.

The Indians are at home again today against New Knoxville at 5 p.m.

Tribe JV rolls

Fort Recovery’s junior varsity softball team didn’t waste much time Monday.

It put up 16 second-inning runs against the Mississinawa Valley Blackhawks on the way to a 17-0 victory after just 21/2 innings. The game was called because of the score and weather.

Kristen Schwieterman led the destruction of the Blackhawks, in which Fort Recovery took advantage of 16 walks. She finished 2-for-3 with a triple — the only extra-base hit of the game — while scoring twice and driving in a run.

Jodi Tobe had the only other Tribe hit as she singled, scored once and stole two bases. Sandra Sudhoff scored three times, and Jill Wehrkamp, Lori Osterholt, Tana Bergman and Lindsey Sudhoff each scored twice.

Tiff Gaerke picked up the win, striking out six and walking two. She did not allow a hit in three innings of work.
