Jobe, Buckland lead Pats (12/02/04)

PORTLAND — Michael Jobe and Brandon Buckland provided just enough offense for the Jay County freshman boys basketball team Wednesday. Jobe and Buckland scored all of the Patriots’ fourth quarter points, and 13 out of their 16 in the second half in a 32-29 victory over the Bellmont Braves.

After each team scored just four points in the first quarter, Jay County (1-1) stepped in from 16-12 at the half. The lead jumped to six points with a quarter to play, and Jay County held on for the win.

Buckland scored four points in the fourth quarter and had eight of his 10 in the second half. Jobe had three fourth-quarter points and five in the second half en route to a game-high 11.

Aaron Daniels was the only other Patriot to score after halftime, hitting a 3-pointer in the third quarter as he finished with five points.

Alex Ainsworth paced Bellmont with 10 points, and Skyler Curtis added six.

WJ girls win pair

DUNKIRK — West Jay’s girls basketball teams each came away victorious Wednesday, with the seventh grade team edging Cowan 21-20 while the eighth graders earned a 19-14 win.

The seventh grade Eagles trailed by two after each of the first two quarters. They outscored Cowan 7-4 in the third quarter to grab the lead and held on for the victory.

Brittany Muhlenkamp led the effort with seven points. Amber McCowan followed with six points, and Jordan Swearingen added four points.

Chelsea Grady set the pace for the eight grade team with seven points. Kelci Reed and Jess Piercey each added four.

Coaching clinic

Jay County High School will host a coaching clinic for IHSAA certification in December.

The clinic, which will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m., is open to the public. Those who complete the course will be eligible for IHSAA certification to become a high school coach.

The course will cover liability and safety, sport nutrition, competition, sportsmanship and violence, and IHSAA guidelines. The cost is $25.

Those interested in attending should register by calling the JCHS athletics office at (260) 726-9806 by Thursday, Dec. 2.

Football combine

Hoosier Gridiron will hold a football combine Sunday at Anderson University for high school players interested in continuing their careers at the collegiate level.
