Up by nine with two outs in the fifth inning, Phil Powell was staring at a 3-0 count. Coach Lea Selvey gave him the green light.
For anyone who has watched the Patriots play this year, the result should have been no surprise.
Phil Powell clobbered the ball over the fence in left-center field, giving the Class 4A No. 5 Jay County High School baseball team a 14-2 win in six innings over the visiting Blackford Bruins.
The game-ending blast was the second of the game for the Patriots (15-1), who saw Michael Jobe tie the single-season school record for homers earlier in the contest. The win was their eighth in a row.
Jobe went deep for the fifth straight game, helping JCHS put up six runs in the second inning and three more in the third. It was his 12th home run of the year - he has hit seven of those in the last five games - tying the school record set last season by Josh Ludy.
The senior also had a double as he drove in three runs and scored twice.
Nick Pryor smacked two doubles, scoring twice and driving in three runs. Thomas McCowan went 3-for-4 with a double and two runs, Billy Wellman had two hits and two RBIs, and Trey Dunn and Colton Lombardo each scored twice.
Wellman improved to 3-0 on the year, giving up just one earned run on nine hits and a walk as he went the distance. He struck out 10 batters.
