NEW HAVEN — Alyssa Johnson’s third trip to the state cross country meet will have to wait until next season.

Johnson, a Jay County junior, ended her cross country season with a 53rd-place finish at the New Haven semi-state meet Saturday. She finished in 16-minutes, 12 seconds.

The top five teams and the top 15 individuals earned state berths.

Adele Mitchel of No. 10 Fort Wayne Concordia won the individual title in 14:11.70 as her team finished third with 99 points. No. 8 Fort Wayne Carroll took first with 68 points, No. 3 Northridge 75 took second, No. 17 Fort Wayne Snider was fourth with 132 and Homestead placed fifth with 215.

It was the third straight trip to the semi-state meet for Johnson, who qualified for the state meet in each of her first two seasons. She finished 46th in the state in 2002 and 58th in 2003.

The meet also marked the end of the season for South Adams sophomore Haleigh Lehman, who finished 45th with a time of 16:04.

Heath Lehman, Haleigh’s brother and the 2004 Bellmont sectional champion, finished his high school career with a 38th-place finish. He crossed the finish line in 16:50.

Blackford’s Adam Lenz was the individual champion in the boys race with a time of 15:53. No. 3 Northridge took the team title with 65 points followed by No. 5 Snider (80), No. 13 Elkhart Memorial (117), East Noble (181) and Blackford (198).

Huelskamp advances

Fort Recovery’s Derrick Huelskamp earned himself another week of competition this weekend. He finished 13th in the sectional race, and will compete in Saturday’s regional meet.

Junior squad wins

The Gym City Jumpers competitive cheerleader squads opened the 2004-05 season this weekend with the Junior squad taking first place at the Mid-West Cheer Expo in Fairfield, Ohio.

Members of the Junior squad are Ali Inman, Tasya Smith, Darian Barnett, Britteny Hamilton, Nicole Hamilton, Jenna Barber, Megan Price, Shelby Pryor, Lauren Runkle, Ashley Dunnington, Brandi Street, Kayci Ryder, Taylor Steed, Kendra Homan and Katie Snyder.

The Mini squad finished second in the competition, and the Youth squad took fifth place.

Football combine

Hoosier Gridiron will hold a football combine in December at Anderson University for high school players interested in continuing their careers at the collegiate level.

Athletes will be evaluated for strength, speed and agility, and there will be special “positional demonstration sessions.” There will also be a speaker who will discus the NCAA Clearinghouse, financial aid, NCAA recruiting rules and college admissions.
