Johnson leads Patriots to 2nd place at Oak Hill (09/10/03)

Two invitationals, two second-place finishes for Alyssa Johnson and two second-place finishes for the Patriots.

The Jay County girls cross country team scored 37 points Tuesday, finishing 10 points behind first-place Western at the 10-team Oak Hill Invitational. The team was second at the Bellmont Invitational to Fort Wayne Northrop in its only other meet this year.

The boys team placed 11th out of 12 teams in the Invitational with a score of 302. The host Oak Hill Golden Eagles won the event with 44 points.

Johnson earned her second second-place finish of the season, crossing the finish line six seconds after Eastern’s Laura Boltz in a time of 15:58.

Freshman Allison Fullenkamp cut 35 seconds off the time she ran at Bellmont, placing fifth in 16:49. Nicole VanSkyock was just behind in 16:58 for a seventh-place result.

Jessica Mosier, another freshman, was 12th as she bettered her previous best time by more than 20 seconds with a time of 17:44. Jill Roughia finished the varsity scoring in 16th with a time of 18:14.

Vanessa Wilkins (18:57) finished 26th, Lindsey Vesperry (19:47) was 42nd, Whitney Schemenaur (21:16) placed 65th and Andrea Collins (22:12) came in 74th.

Nathan McClung had the top finish for the Patriot boys, placing 55th overall in 20:21. Josh Atkinson was 58th in 20:35, and senior Paul Imel took 67th in 21:04.

Freshman Josh Selvey was 72 in 21:17, and Ian Shannon had a time of 21:58 to place 84th. Josh Hawn (22:07) placed 86th, Cory Mock (22:35) was 93rd, Josh Stultz (23:02) took 97th, Josh Shatto (23:35) placed 104th and Lucas Smith (24:28) was 112th.

Jay County will participate in the Blackford Invitational Saturday at 9:30 a.m.

Patriot golfers split

The Jay County girls golf team took a win and a loss Tuesday, defeating the Wes-Del Warriors 233-258 and losing to the Yorktown Tigers 190-233.

Senior Blake Hendricks recorded the top score for the Patriots, finishing with a 56. She played even on the par-5 fourth hole and notched bogeys on No. 8 and 9 to lead the team.

Shonda Sutton had a pair of bogies in a fairly consistent round for a 57, and Deanna Drinkut notched four bogies on the way to a 59. Brianne Morrical rounded out the varsity scoring with a 61, as she finished her round with a par.

Kim Norris scored a 71, and Miranda Denney had a 76.

Jay County will play its final home match of the season today against Muncie Southside at 4:30 p.m.

No. 1 Cats stomp Jay

Jay County’s volleyball team ran into a buzz saw Tuesday, taking a 21-7, 21-11, 21-1 loss against the Class 4A No. 1 defending state champion Muncie Central Bearcats.

Ashley Overla managed three kills to lead the team, and Sarah Ainsworth had five assists. Sara Hough finished with two kills, eight digs and one point.

Becki Beeler had one point and six digs, and Erin St. Myers notched five digs.

The Patriot junior varsity team took a 21-8, 21-10 loss while the freshman team fell 21-6, 21-10.

Erica McIntire scored four points for the JV squad, three on aces. She also had six digs.

Shannon O’Dell paced the team with three kills, and Miranda Tingley had two. Jamie Walker picked up five digs, and Erica Clark had three points.

Amber Cotherman led the freshman team’s defense with eight digs. Jessica Muhlenkamp scored two points, and Erica Clark had a pair of assists.

Theresa Reinhart, Maria Miller and Carrisa Wilkins each had one kill.

The next match for Jay County is Thursday at Monroe Central at 6 p.m.

JC freshman fall

The Jay County freshman football team suffered a 19-8 loss to the Connersville Spartans Monday.

Josh Johnson had a big game for the Patriots (1-1), scoring the lone touchdown on a 5-yard run in the third quarter. He also hit Casey Waters with a pass for the 2-point conversion.

Johnson added a fumble recovery and an interception on the defensive end, and Dustin Hilfiker also recovered a fumble.

Eagle teams split

West Jay’s eighth grade volleyball team scored a 21-18, 15-21, 21-14 win over Southern Wells Thursday, but the seventh grade team lost in 12-21, 21-18, 21-9 to the Raiders.

Brittany O’Dell had nine points for the eighth grade team (1-1). Brittany Crabtree followed with six.

The seventh grade team got nine points from Keri VanSkyock. Terra Kelly scored four points.[[In-content Ad]]
