Johnson leads runners to second place (08/24/05)

JCHS cross country

DECATUR — Jay County’s girls cross country team showed its talent Tuesday. It still wasn’t enough to upend the Fort Wayne North Side Redskins.

The Patriots posted four runners in the top 10 — more than any other team — only to finish second to Northside 51-64 at the seven-team Bellmont Invitational Tuesday.

South Adams was third (69), while the defending sectional champion host Squaws were a distant fourth (92).

The Jay County boys team was last among the five schools which fielded full teams, finishing with 129 points. The host Braves were first with 21 points, and North Side took second with 40.

Senior Alyssa Johnson paced the Patriot girls in their first meet of the season, finishing fourth overall in 16-minutes, 37 seconds. She was behind defending sectional champion Wendy Mahlan of Bellmont (15:24) as well as North Side seniors Amber Wray (15:43) and Ashley Wray (16:27).

South Adams’ Haleigh Lehman followed Johnson in fifth in 16:56.

Alyssa’s sophomore sister, Amanda, was next, leading a pack of three Patriots across the finish line. She took eighth in 17:37, and was followed closely by freshman Kylie Wellman in ninth in 17:52 and junior Jessica Mosier in 10th in 17:59.

Freshman Kelly Weaver finished off Jay County’s team total, placing 33rd in 20:13.

Sophomore Josh Selvey was the top runner for the Patriot boys team. He finished in 29th overall in 20:23, which was good for 22 team points. Josh Atkinson followed in 32nd with a time of 20:28.

Travis Towell was third across the finish line for Jay County in 20:43 (37th). Cory Mock followed in 20:46 (39th) and Robert Ralston was next in 21:01 (42nd).

Also running for the Patriots were Cassie Laux (20:54 - 37th) for the girls team, and Doug Murray (22:31 - 50th) and Josh Stultz (23:30 - 54th) for the boys.[[In-content Ad]]
