Johnson lifts Patriot runners (04/05/06)

MUNCIE — Amanda Johnson powered the Jay County girls track team to victory. Justin Gilbert tried to do the same for the boys.
Johnson, a sophomore, was in on four wins as the Patriots scored 69 points to outdistance the Blackford Bruins and host Muncie Southside Rebels, which each finished with 43.
Gilbert had a pair of individual victories and anchored a relay win as Jay County’s boys were second with 48 points behind Blackford (60).
Johnson led one of four one-two finishes for the Patriots in the 400-meter dash, winning in front of teammate Tequila Guntle in 1-minute, 5.9 seconds. Her other victory came in the 1,600 run in 5:59.
She teamed with her sister, senior Alyssa Johnson, Jessica Mosier and Allison Fullenkamp to win the 4x800 relay in 11:35.36. She also joined Erika Hunt, Nicole Pfeifer and Janel Chittum for first place in the 4x400 relay in 4:52.
Gilbert was in on three of the four victories for the Jay County boys and finished second in his other event. He controlled the sprints, winning the 100 dash in 11.48 and the 200 dash in 24.26.
He teamed with Alex Michael, Dustin Harris and Brandon Reynard to take first in the 4x100 relay in 46.9.
Hunt, Alyssa Johnson and Tina Gingrasso also added one-two finishes for the Patriot girls.
The victory for Hunt came in the 300 hurdles in 59 seconds followed by Stephanie Wellman two seconds behind. Gingrasso finished her 800 run victory in 2:46 with Mosier second in 2:51. Alyssa Johnson led the way in the 3,200 run in 13:28 with Kylie Wellman second with a time of 13:35.
Freshman Dexter Shreve came up with the other victory for the boys team. He grabbed the long jump win with a leap of 19 feet, five inches, and Gilbert was second at 19 feet, one-quarter inch.[[In-content Ad]]
